NTL TRACK & FIELD: NEB READY FOR 2021 SEASON TO GET STARTED (2021-04-12)

Shaking off the rust has been paramount for all teams this spring sports season after last year’s was cancelled, but for NEB, the pre-season has been especially long. The school went remote right before the track and field season was supposed to start, thus missing the first week of meets.

They’re back this week, though, and ready to get going.

“Enthusiasm and energy is quite high for returning team members, as well as new members to the team,” said coach Greg Kelley. “They missed the opportunity to compete, and train last year so they are anxious to see the season to begin.”

They’ve been working hard to get their athletes in shape to compete this dual meet season, with two meets a week for much of April and early May.

“Of course, for returning athletes, there is some rust the needs some work, as well as helping them find their zone,” said Kelley. “There is always tuning of mechanics, and techniques for throwers, jumpers and runners. Our drills are aimed at developing speed, strength, agility, and endurance. Every practice begins with core training aimed at increasing overall body strength and health.”

Like a lot of teams goals this year are focused on making the season a positive experience, while developing them physically and mentally.

“Every new PR is a win,” said Kelley. “Push yourself, look at every disappointment as an opportunity. We are a small team, but when we leave each meet leave a positive impression. We are strong competitors, have heart, and give our best performance.”

He hopes his team can stay on the track, and field, but anything can happen this year.

“Our returning throwers and runners are looking strong and promising this year,” said Kelley. “Our practice season has been interrupted twice due to Covid, which has negatively impacted our preparedness for the season. We will need to double down on our practice sessions.”

They will be led by their throwers, seniors Paige Howell and Dan Williams, and junior Dan Seeley.

Seeley was seventh as a freshman in the discuss at the 2019 NTL Championships two years ago, the highest freshman in the group, and as a sophomore Williams was seventh in the javelin.

Howell was sixth in the discus at the championships, and ninth in the javelin.

Kelley believes all three should qualify for districts, but is looking for all his athletes to shine.

“I expect all our athletes to do their very best, give their all, and show improvement over the course of the season,” he said.
