NTL BASEBALL: CANTON USES BIG 6TH INNING TO TOP NPM (2021-04-26)

Northern Tier Sports Report
MANSFIELD — A 3-run sixth inning broke a 6-6 tie as Canton shook off a slow start to beat NP-Mansfield 9-6 in NTL baseball action Monday.

NPM jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, but Canton matched them with two runs in the top of the third. The Tigers got one back in the bottom half of the inning, but in the fourth Canton rallied again, going up 6-3.

Not to be out done, NPM added three themselves in the bottom half of the third to tie the game, which is where it stayed until the sixth.

Hudson Ward (2-for-5) had a double with two runs, and 2-RBI to lead Canton, as Cooper Kitchen (2-for-4), also had a multi-hit game.

Cam Bellows (1-for-4), Evan Landis (1-for-1), Weston Bellows (1-for-1), Joel Schoonover (1-for-4), Timmy Ward (1-for-3), Carter Route (1-for-2), and Bailey Ferguson (1-for-3) also had hits.

Cam Bellows scored twice, as Weston Bellows, Schoonover, Timmy Ward, Brenen Taylor, and Ferguson also crossed home.

Weston Bellows, Schoonover, Timmy Ward, and Ferguson each had an RBI as well.

Carter Route started, and went three innings for the no decision. He struck, out two, with three walks, nine hits, and six earned runs.

Hayden Ward went the next 3 1/3-innings, striking out four with two walks, and three hits to get the win.

Schoonover went the final two-thirds to nab the save, with a walk, and a strikeouts.

Down 2-0 in the top off of the third due to a Logan Choplosky home run, Canton struck back as Cam Bellows had a single. He scored on a Hudson Ward double, who then scored on a Weston Bellows singles to knot the game up at 2-2.

After NPM took a lead in the bottom of the third, the Warriors came right back in the fourth, beginning with back to back walks from Timmy Ward, and Carter Route. An error on a Kitchen bunt allowed Timmy Ward to score, tying the game at 3-3.

Ferguson then singled to bring in Taylor, running for Route, to put Canton up 4-3.

Two batters later a Hudson Ward single would score Ferguson, though Kitchen was caught at home for the second out.

Hudson Ward would then steal home during a pick-off attempt at first base to put the Warriors up 6-3.

The Tigers would come back with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game up.

The sixth inning was the deciding at bat, with Cam Bellows reaching on an error to start things off. He would take second on an error, third on a wild pitch, then score off a pass ball to put Canton up 7-6.

After Weston Bellows walked, Schoonover hit him in with a single for an 8-6 lead.

Then, with two outs, Timmy Ward singled in Schoonover to put Canton up 9-6.

The Tigers would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but a strikeout by Schoonover, followed by a fielder’s choice, ended the threat, and gave Canton the win.

The Warriors will host Troy on Wednesday, with a 4:30 p.m. start.
