NTL BASEBALL: WYALUSING DROPS TWO TO NP-MANSFIELD (2021-04-30)

MANSFIELD — It was a tough day for Wyalusing baseball, as they dropped two to NP-Mansfield during NTL double-header action Friday.

They lost the first game on a walk-off hit 15-14, then fell 5-2 in six innings to the Tigers in the second game.


NPM built a 12-5 lead going into the seventh inning in the first game, when Wyalusing rallied for nine runs to take a 14-12 advantage. Then, in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers scored three runs to win, the final run coming off a Bryan Bogaczyk walk-off double.


Chase Houser (2-for-2) led the Rams at the plate, with a double, two runs, and an RBI. Kevin VanDeMark (2-for-5) also scored twice, with 2-RBI, while Trehnon Hugo (1-for-3), Jacob Bruyn (1-for-4), Hunter Moss (1-for-4), Blake Morningstar (1-for-2), and CJ Carr (1-for-4) also had hits.


Hugo had a double, with two runs scored, and an RBI, Moss had a double with an RBI, and a run scored, Morningstar had a double, with two runs scored, and an RBI, Carr scored, and had knocked in a run, as Bruyn also crossed home.


Caden Engisch scored twice, with Nick Kelly also getting a run.


Morningstar started, and went 2 1/3-innings for the no decision, striking out two with one walk, no hits, and five unearned runs.


Hugo went the final 4 2/3-innings for the loss, striking out one with seven hits, and 10 runs, but no walks.


Down 3-0 in the top of the third, Hugo got Wyalusing going a 1-out double. Houser then hit him in with a double of his own to cut it to 3-1.


NPM would make it 5-1 with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Rams would answer in the fifth with a run. Morningstar rocked a double, with Hugo hitting him in with a sacrifice fly to cut it to 5-2.


Then, in the top of the sixth, Wyalusing scored three runs, beginning with Houser reaching on an error. Engisch then got hit by a pitch, followed by VanDeMark hitting a single.


Moss then brought in Houser with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later Morningstar brought in both Engisch and VandeMark to knot the game up at 5-5.


NPM would go on to score seven runs in the sixth, highlighted by a Logyn Bogaczyk home run, his fourth of the year.


That gave them their 7-run lead as they went to the seventh, but the Rams responded. 


Bruyn reached on an error, followed by Houser drawing a walk. Engisch would reach on an error, with VanDemark then hitting in Bruyn, and Houser with a single. Moss then doubled in a run to keep things going, followed by Kelly drawing a walk.


Morningstar would then reach on an error, scoring a run, as Carr then got an RBI with a single.


Hugo would then reach on an error, being the Rams’ ninth straight base runner. He would eventually score their ninth run of the inning to put them up 14-12, before NPM rallied in the seventh to win it.


In the second game Wyalusing’s bats weren’t quite as hot, garnering just two hits.


Nick Vanderpool, batting out of the ninth spot, went 2-for-2 with an RBI, with Moss and Kelly scoring their two runs.


Kelly got the start, and went 5 2/3-innings for the loss, striking out three, while allowing eight hits, and five runs. Bruyn pitched the final third.


After they exchanged a couple scoreless innings, NPM used three runs in the third to take the lead. They got two more in the top of the fifth to go up 5-2.


In the bottom half of the inning Wyalusing was able to get a rally going as VanDeMark reached on an error. Moss then got on base off a fielder’s choice, followed by Kelly walking. 


With two outs Vanderpool hit in Moss, followed by Kelly scoring on an error off the bat of Hugo to cut it to 5-2.


The game was then called after the sixth due to darkness.


The Rams will now look to turn things around as they host Towanda on Monday.
