NTL TRACK & FIELD: WYALUSING'S CAMERON TAKES 6TH IN LONG JUMP AT STATES (2021-05-28)

SHIPPENSBURG — Wyalusing’s Kashawn Cameron came in to the PIAA, Track and Field Championships as the fifth seed in the Class AA boys’ long jump. However, at one point it looked like Cameron may not make the finals. He recovered, though, to take sixth with a jump of 21-feet, 4 1/4-inches Friday.

“It’s a great feeling,” Cameron said about earning a medal. “I’m very excited for next year, too.”

Being in a such a large field may have gotten to him a little it.

“It was definitely a bit nerve-racking,” he said. “Definitely hearing all the bigger jumps in front of me. I had a slow start, but I got it done at the end of the day.”

He posted a 20-plus foot jump on his first attempt, but scratched on his second. He would be the last one in for the finals, but found his mojo then, launching the 21-feet, 4 1/4-inch jump that got him on the podium.

“I just talked to my coaches to see what they thought I needed to do,” explained Cameron. “I executed it a little bit.”

He did enough to take home some hardware, especially on a day that was less than ideal for jumping - cool, with a slight breeze, but no rain.

Cameron also saw what it takes to win a state title - Holy Redeemer’s Justin Shoats won at 22-feet, 9 1/2-inches - a goal that’s well within reach, as Shoats’ mark is just an inch beyond Cameron’s best.

“There’s always better,” remarked Cameron. “But I can be better, too.”

It was a rough day for his teammate, Grady Cobb, in the high jump. The junior no heighted on the day.

His first attempt at 5-feet, 8-inches was well above the bar, but he hit it with his feet. He ran into the bar on his second attempt, though.

On his final attempt, Cobb once again had enough height to clear the bar, but clipped it with his feet.

Regardless, both will have a chance to improve upon their performances in 2022.
