SAYRE'S HORTONS LEAD BRADFORD COUNTY ALL-STAR BASEBALL TEAM (2021-07-23)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It was quite the baseball season, with both NTL division titles going down to the wire. Sayre ultimately held off Canton to claim the NTL Division-II title, while also winning a district championship.

They were powered by the cousins Brayden Horton and Luke Horton.

Brayden hit .483 with eight home runs, and 41-RBIs, while also having clutch hits - none of them more clutch than a walk-off home run in extra innings against Troy.

That’s good enough to make him the Player of the Year for the Bradford County All-Stars.

Luke was strong the mound, going 9-1 with a 1.5 ERA and 64 strikeouts. He also pitched in Sayre’s toughest games, going unbeaten in the league and district, which makes him the Pitcher of the Year.

Sayre’s biggest competition in the league was Canton, who came 1-out away from beating them, but ultimately fell 13-12 in a marathon contest.

The Warriors used an aggressive offense to score, with lead-off batter Cam Bellows the tip of the spear. Bellows did a lot for Canton, hitting .347 with 17-RBI, and a team leading 42 stolen bases, which makes him the Offensive Player of the Year.

The Canton coaching staff was able to get the most out of their veteran team, despite lacking a true power hitter or ace on the mound. They went 18-4, with their of their losses coming against Sayre.

That gives Bob Rockwell and his staff the Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

They may have had to wait an extra year, but Wyalusing’s Blake Morningstar proved he was worth the wait. The hard throwing sophomore had a 2.1 ERA and struck out 74 batters, making him the Newcomer of the Year.

On the first team are Sayre’s Brayden Horton, Luke Horton, Kannon VanDuzer, and Zach Garrity, along with Canton’s Weston and Cam Bellows.

Athens’ Kaden Setzer, and Karter Rude are on the first team, along with Morningstar, and Towanda’s Chase Parker.

On the second team are Wyalusing’s Hunter Moss, Trehnon Hugo, and Spencer Krewson, Canton’s Hudson Ward, Joel Schoonover, and Hayden Ward, NEB’s Nick Beers, and Clay Wiggins, Troy’s Kory Schucker, and Justice Chimics, Sayre’s David Northrup, and Athens’ Cameron Sullivan.
