THE WEEK AHEAD: NTL ROLLS ON IN UNCERTAIN FUTURE (2020-09-27)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The leaves are starting to turn as we enter the last vestiges of September. And, there have been a lot of changes around the NTL landscape as well.

Canton suspended school operations last week until October 17 while the Towanda volleyball team can’t return to the court for another week.


Troy recently announced they had two Covid-19 positive cases so it’s quite possible that this will be another tumultuous week.


FOOTBALL

Towanda (0-2) at Athens (2-0), Friday, 7 p.m.: The Black Knights are coming off a bye week as they travel up Route 220 looking for their first win of the season. Athens is coming off a solid win against Wyalusing as they look to become 3-0.


Troy (2-1) at Wellsboro (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.: The Trojans used a big second half to topple North Penn-Mansfield while the Hornets didn’t play due to Canton suspending school operations. Troy got back to their pound-and-ground game and looked their best last Friday.


Wyalusing (2-1) at Sayre (1-1), Friday, 7 p.m.: The Rams came up short against Athens, though made the Wildcats sweat the last couple of minutes. Sayre is coming off their first win of the season against CV.


BOYS’ SOCCER

Wellsboro (3-0) at Troy (2-2), Monday, 4 p.m.: The Trojans get their chance as the top team in the league to start the week. Troy hasn’t played since last Monday, a loss to NEB.


NEB (3-2) at Towanda (0-3), Monday, 6 p.m.: The Panthers will face a resurgent Black Knight team in an evening match-up. NEB is coming off a win over Williamson while Towanda fell to NP-Liberty, both matches were on Saturday.


Towanda (0-3) at Williamson (0-4), Wednesday, 4 p.m.: A match-up of two winless teams coming into the week, though they’ve played in close matches.


NP-Liberty (3-0) at Troy (2-2), Wednesday, 4 p.m.: Another undefeated team for the Trojans as they get their shot at the upstart Mountaineers.


NEB (3-2) at Athens (3-1), Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.: The Panthers will face the defending NTL champions as both teams try to keep pace with the Hornets.


NEB (3-2) at Sayre (1-3), Saturday, 10 a.m.: The third game of the week for NEB as they take on the other valley team. The ‘Skins lone win this year has been against Towanda.


Montgomery at Troy (2-2), Saturday, 11 a.m.: A rare non-league match-up for the Trojans to end the week.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

NEB (1-5-1) at Wyalusing (3-2), Tuesday, 4 p.m.: It was a one goal game when the two met up near LeRaysville at the start of the season. The Panthers are coming off their first win of the season while the Rams went toe to toe with Athens and lost just 1-0 last Friday.


Wellsboro (3-0-1) at Troy (3-1), Tuesday, 4 p.m.: The short handed Trojans will welcome the Hornets, who have yet to lose a match this season. This is their first match-up of the season.


Towanda (2-1) at Sayre (1-4), Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.: The Knights look to build off their win over Williamson as they head to the valley. Sayre’s lone win this season came at home against NEB.


Troy (3-1) at Muncy, Wednesday, 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans head south for a non-league match-up against the always tough Indians.


NEB (1-5-1) at NP-Mansfield (0-3-1), Thursday, 4 p.m.: The Panthers’ road trip continues as they look to keep their good play going. 


Towanda (2-1) at Athens (3-0-1), Thursday, 5:30: The Lady Knights get their shot at the defending NTL champions. It will be Towanda’s second road game in the valley of the week.


Wyalusing (3-2) at Sayre (1-4), Thursday, 5:30 p.m.: The Rams hit the road for this valley team match-up. It will be their first match-up of the season.


NEB (1-5-1) at Troy (3-1), Saturday, noon: The Trojans get a rematch at home one week to the day against the Panthers, who gave them their first loss of the season.


Wyalusing (3-2) at NP-Mansfield (0-3-1), Saturday, 2 p.m.: The Rams handled the Tigers 6-0 last week at home as they cap an important week of games if they’re going to stay in the NTL title hunt.


VOLLEYBALL

NEB (3-0) at Athens (3-1), Monday, 7:30 p.m.: The first match-up of the season for these two strong teams. The Panthers are looking to stay unbeaten on the year as the Wildcats continue their 3-match win streak.


Athens (3-1) at Wyalusing (1-2), Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.: The first match-up of the season for the two teams. The Rams will look to get back into the divisional race while the Wildcats want to continue their strong play.


Williamson (0-3) at Troy (1-2), Tuesday, 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans will look to build on their first win of the season as they play host to the winless Warriors.


NP-Liberty (0-0) at Wyalusing (1-2), Thursday, 7:30 p.m.: The Rams welcome the defending league and district champions for a home match. 


Troy (1-2) at Athens (3-1), Thursday, 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans will be the third opponent this week for the Wildcats as they battle in this NTL Division-I tilt.


South Williamsport at Troy (1-2), Saturday, 11 a.m.: The Trojans host this non-league match-up, a very winnable game for them as they look to get back to .500.


Wyalusing (1-2) at NEB (3-0), Saturday, 1:30 p.m.: The Panthers won their first match-up of the season down at Wyalusing, now the Rams will look to get that win back to end their week.


CROSS-COUNTRY

NEB, Towanda at CV, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.: The two Bradford County teams hit the road. The CV (2-2), Towanda (1-1) and NEB (1-2) boys’ teams will look to get above .500 while on the girls’ side NEB (2-1) will look to stay unbeaten against CV (2-2) and Towanda (1-1).


Wellsboro at Troy, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.: The Lady Trojans (2-0) will look to defend their title against the Hornets (4-1). On the boys’ side Troy (1-1) has a chance to get back over .500 against the Hornets (1-4).


Wyalusing at NP-Mansfield, Tuesday, 4:30 p.m.: Both Wyalusing teams come in 3-0 as they try to keep their streaks going against NPM boys (2-0) and girls (1-1). This meet was originally scheduled at Canton.


GIRLS’ TENNIS

Towanda (5-1) at CV (5-3), Monday, 4 p.m.: The Knights look to stay unbeaten in the NTL against their toughest opponent in the league.


Wellsboro (0-6) at Towanda (5-1), Wednesday, 4 p.m.: Towanda swept the Hornets at home in their first meeting of the season.


NP-Liberty (2-4) at Towanda (5-1), Thursday, 4 p.m.: The Knights have beaten NPL twice as they face off for the third time this season.


GOLF

NTL at Tyoga Country Club, Tuesday, 1 p.m.: The league heads to the always tough Wellsboro course. NP-Mansfield (29-0) is firmly in control but the Wellsboro (23-6) is always difficult at home. CV (16-13) will look to stay above. 500 while Sayre (13-17) tries to get back to .500. Athens (10-19), Towanda (5-22) and Wyalusing (4-25) will look to improve upon their recent performances.
