THE WEEK AHEAD: BIG GAMES ACROSS THE BOARD THIS WEEK (2022-01-09)

Northern Tier Sports Report
As we head into mid-January the weather maybe getting colder, but the NTL races are heating up.

WRESTLING

Monday, January 10

NEB (0-9) at Troy (2-2), 7 p.m.: After back to back close losses the Trojans will look to get a dual win as they host the Panthers, who are coming off the South Williamsport Tournament over the weekend.


Tuesday, January 11

Troy (2-2) at Wyalusing (11-3), 7 p.m.: Another big NTL match, with both teams falling in their last league duals - Troy to Towanda, Wyalusing to Canton. The Rams are coming off a 4-1 performance at the Line Mountain Duals last weekend.


Canton (3-0) at Athens (3-1), 7 p.m.: A rematch of last year’s tough battle, as both teams come in with NTL aspirations. Both teams were at the Mid-Winter Mayhem, with the Wildcats finishing one place up on the Warriors.


NEB (0-9) at Towanda (12-2), 7 p.m.: The Knights open the week by hosting the Panthers. Towanda is coming off a 4-1 performance at their Flynn Duals as they look to stay unbeaten in the NTL race.


Wednesday, January 12

Sayre (0-8), Williamson (5-7) at Canton (3-0), 5 p.m.: The Warriors will host back to back matches with Sayre and Williamson as they look to stay undefeated on the season.


Thursday, January 13

Troy (2-2) at Sayre (0-8), 7 p.m.: The Trojans’ third dual meet in three days as part of five days of competitive wrestling for them.


Warrior Run (1-3) at Towanda (12-2), 7 p.m.: The Knights’ home stand continues as they host Warrior Run for a non-league match. Warrior Run hasn’t had much luck in duals, but lost to Montgomery by just two points, and tied Muncy 36-36.


Friday, January 14

Troy, Canton at New Oxford Tournament: A busy week ends with a tournament for both teams, as they travel to the annual tournament.


Saturday, January 15

Troy, Canton at New Oxford Tournament: the second day of the tournament for the two teams.


Benton (2-0) at Wyalusing (11-3), 1 p.m.: The Rams welcome Benton for their annual battle. The Tigers recently took fourth at the Mid-Winter Mayhem Tournament.


BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, January 10

Troy (6-1) at Warrior Run (1-7), 7:30 p.m.: Coming off there big win over Wellsboro, the Trojans will hit the road for their non-league battle against the Defenders. Warrior Run won their opener, but have lost seven straight.


Montgomery (3-3) at Canton (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors have won three straight, and now lead the District IV, Class AA standings. The Red Raiders are battling for their playoff lives as they try to hold on to the eighth seed.


Wednesday, January 12

Wyalusing (7-4) at Canton (5-3), 7:30 p.m.: The game of the week as this will decide who sits on top of the Small School standings. Both teams have had up-and-down seasons, but they’re both riding 3-game win streaks coming into this contest.


Towanda (2-7) at Troy (6-1), 7:30 p.m.: It’ll be a week since the Knights played, as their game on Saturday got postponed. They took Athens to the wire last week, though, as they try to get back on the winning wagon.


NP-Liberty (6-4) at NEB (2-8), 7:30 p.m.: Few teams have had as many heart breaking losses as the Panthers this season, but they took Wyalusing to the fourth quarter, so appear to be turning a corner. The Mounties are winners of three of their last four games.


Friday, January 14

Sayre (2-5) at Wyalusing (7-4), 7:30 p.m.: A big Small School tilt, the Redskins are looking to turn things around. They started the year 2-1, but have lost four straight since.


Troy (6-1) at Williamson (2-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans will travel out west for this Large School battle. After opening the season 2-1, the Warriors have gone 0-4.


NEB (2-8) at Canton (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: Canton will celebrate their 1972 NTL championship team on this day, as they finish off a busy week against an up-and-coming Panther squad.


NP-Mansfield (6-1) at Towanda (2-7): The Tigers suffered their first loss, falling to their rivals over the weekend. The Knights will look to get the upset on their home floor.


Saturday, January 15

Towanda (2-7) at Williamson (2-5), 1:30 p.m.: Last Saturday’s game has been moved to this day, as the Knights finish off a busy week with three games in four days.


GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, January 10

Athens (5-2) at Wyalusing (2-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams are coming off three straight losses where they were close, or led, at some point during the games. They’ve had success against Athens at home the past two years, though.


Tuesday, January 11

NPM (4-6) at Troy (5-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans are riding a 5-game win streak, but will take on a Tiger squad that has won two of their last three games.


NPL (3-5) at Canton (5-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors opened the season with a win over the Mounties, and will be looking to bounce back from their loss against NEB over the weekend.


Towanda (4-3) at Wellsboro (4-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights’ road trip continues, as they travel to Wellsboro this week after going out to NPM last week. Paige Manchester nearly had a triple-double in their win over the Tigers.


NEB (8-2) at Sayre (0-6), 6 p.m.: The Panthers are winners of five straight, and will look to keep it going as they travel to the valley for this Small School battle. There is no JV contest.


Thursday, January 13

Sayre (0-6) at Wyalusing (2-6), 6:30 p.m.: A make-up from earlier in the season, the Rams will look to pick up a win against the winless Redskins. There is no JV contest.


Athens (5-2) at Troy (5-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans welcome the Wildcats in a big Large School battle. Both teams recently beat Wellsboro by 10 points, as Athens is riding a 2-game win streak themselves.


CV (0-7) at Canton (5-5), 7:30 p.m.: Another chance for the Warriors to pick up a win during this Division-II game. This will be the second straight home game for Canton.


Towanda (4-3) at NPL (3-5), 7:30 p.m: The Knights return to Tioga County for the third straight time, things time for a cross-over game that was rescheduled from earlier in the season.


Williamson (2-4) at NEB (8-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers continue their trek through the Small School Division, hosting the Warriors this day. Williamson is currently on a 3-game skid, falling to NPL in their most recent game.


Saturday, January 15

Wyalusing (2-6) at Towanda (4-3), 1:30 p.m.: The Knights finally get a home game, their first since facing NEB way back before Christmas. It’s a rivalry game, so expect the intensity to ratcheted up a notch.
