NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: THOREN'S LATE BUCKET LEADS CANTON PAST WYALUSING (2022-01-28)

WYALUSING — With nine seconds to go Canton’s Carolyn Thoren hit the game winning lay-up, which allowed the Warriors to escape Wyalusing with a 32-31 win in NTL girls’ basketball action Friday.

The Rams held a 26-20 lead after three quarters, but Canton out scored them 12-5 in the final frame to pull out the win.

Kendall Kitchen led Canton with 12 points, to go with three rebounds, while Emme Tymeson added eight points. Thoren had six points, four boards, and two blocks, as Aislyn Williams finished with four points. Jazmyn Hickok rounded things out with two points, as Molly Ward grabbed 10 boards.

Bryn Zionkowski got hot in the second half to lead Wyalusing, netting 15 of her points after halftime - four of them were 3-balls - while Olivia Leichliter added eight points, 12 rebounds, and two blocks.

Layla Botts had four points, three rebounds, and three assists, with Marissa Johnson and Olivia Spencer getting two points apiece. Johnson had two steals, with Spencer handing out three assists.

It was a defensive battle in the first quarter, with the Rams taking a 5-2 lead on the strength of Botts’ free throw shooting a she was 3-for-6.

Things opened up in the second quarter, with Leichliter and Kitchen leading their respective teams with six points each, as Wyalusing led 14-10 at the half. 

In the third Zionkowski scored all of Wyalusing’s 12 points - three on 3-pointers - but Canton kept pace with 10 points of their own, as Tymeson had six, and Thoren netted four.

The offense dried up for the Rams in the fourth, netting just five points, while Canton’s 12 points propelled them to the win, led by Kitchen’s six.

Both teams are in action next Tuesday, with Canton at Sayre, and Wyalusing hosting NP-Mansfield. The tip-off for the games is 6 p.m.
