WILLIAMSPORT — While it may not have been the finish Kashawn Cameron wanted, the Wyalusing jumper will be headed back to states in the long jump after taking second during the District IV, Class AA Track and Field Championships Thursday.

Cameron took second with a jump of 21-feet, 5 1/2-inches, one of three attempts he had that went over 21-feet.

“It’s a great feeling,” Cameron said about getting back to states. “I’m really excited to go back.”

Cameron didn’t make his debut until the Lasagna Invitational in late April due to injury, but didn’t really get going until the NTL Championships last week.

“I think I’ve been pretty consistent on my journey back into it, and I feel great going into states,” remarked Cameron.

He was hoping to defend his title from last year, but Southern Columbia’s Jake Rose pulled out the win in 22-feet, 2 1/2-inches.

“I wanted to be a back to back champion, unfortunately, it didn’t happen,” said Cameron. “I’m ready to get back at it.”

With one week left until states Cameron knows what he needs to work on.

“I need more of my technique,” he said. “I have the speed, and everything else, I just need to work on my technique.”

He wasn’t the only jumper to have a strong day, as on the girls’ side Hannah Ely came in fourth in the long jump at 15-feet, 10-inches.

They were the only two medalists on the day for the Rams.

Jacob Palfreyman was 12th in the shot put at 42-feet, 7 1/4-inches, while Grady Cobb took 19th in the long jump in 18-feet, 5 1/2-inches.

Their 4x800 relay of Jake Caplan, Landen Kaufmann, Brody Fuhrey, and Clayton Petlock were 16th at 9:25.61, with James Rogan taking 22nd in the 110 hurdles preliminaries at 19.22.

On the girls’ side Olivia Haley breezed through the 100 trials, taking third in the prelims at 13.23, and fourth in the semis at 13.06.

Kassandra Kerin was 21st in the prelims in 13.99, while their 4x800 relay of Kira Allen, Kayla Beebe, Laina Beebe, and Savannah Gromley was 12th in 11:16.28.

The District IV Championships will conclude on Saturday back at Williamsport High School with a 9 a.m. start time.
