NTL TRACK & FIELD: NEB'S SEELEY WINS DISCUS TITLE, LAUDERMILCH EARNS STATE BERTH IN 2-MILE (2022-05-22)

WILLIAMSPORT – NEB’s Dan Seeley knew he had a big throw in him, and, on his next to last discus toss, he found it, 152-feet, 1-inch to win the event, and punch his ticket to states during the District IV, Class AA Track and Field Championships Saturday.

I just relaxed, I realized I was in second, and I was going to go to states if (Milton’s) Cole Goodwin couldn’t beat me, and he didn’t, so I just let it rip,” explained Seeley.

It wasn’t easy getting to the finals for Seeley, has he scratched his first two throws, before putting himself in second place to get into the finals.

He is still short of the school record - 152-feet, 11-inches - which is main goal going into next week. And he knows it’s in there, too, as he would have had it in his last throw if he didn’t foul.

“That was a big one,” said Seeley. “If I stayed in on that, and kept it in, it probably would have been 155 or so.”

That’s been Seeley’s biggest struggles this year, not faulting.

“I got better at it, but after I keep trying to go big, it’s hard to stand,” he explained. “I’m going to have to do a lot of practice in the circle.”

He’ll be joined by freshman Gracelyn Laudermilch, who took second in the 3200 in 11:36.74 to advance to the state meet.

“I’m happy, it was my goal all year,” said Laudermilch. “I did what I needed to do.”

She hung right with top seed and eventual champion, Bloomsburg’s Maizy Aikey (11:15.31) for six laps, giving her a big cushion going into the final 800.

“I was trying to hang with her the entire time, but I kind of fell apart,” said Laudermilch. “I realized she was starting to pull ahead, so I tried to shorten and lengthen my stride, but my legs, they just like I was about to fall.”

She did fall, but not until she crossed the finish line in second, less than four seconds ahead of the third place finisher.

“Casey (Ellis) was yelling at me, and I was like ‘oh, come on,’” explained Laudermilch. “I kind of kicked it in as much as I could.”

Ethan Finch (140-feet, 2-inches) took fourth in the discus, while Austin Kithcart (5-feet, 11-inches) came in seventh in the high jump. Shakei Smith also medaled, finishing eighth in the 400 at 52.93.

Maisie Neuber (115-feet, 7-inches) was fifth in the javelin, while Emma Neuber took eighth with a career best 31-feet, 4-inches, in the shot put.

The boys’ 4x100 relay of Gavin Merritt, Jace Nichols, Brendon Allen, and Cesar Alvarez (47.79) came in 13th, while the 4x400 relay of Merritt, Aiden Kapr, Brandon Kuhn, and Smith was 14th in 3:46.55.

Kuhn (2:07.27) was 11th in the 800, and 18th in the high jump at 5-feet, 5-inches. Ryan Jones (11:32.18) took 21st in the 3200.
