NTL SOFTBALL: CANTON DROPS PLAYOFF GAME TO CV (2022-05-24)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — Canton’s hot bats to end the regular season cooled off against Cowanesque Valley, as they lost 6-0 to the Indians in District IV, Class A softball quarterfinal action Tuesday.

“CV is tough,” said Canton coach Lyle Wesneski. “You’ve got 1-through-5 that have won 16 games, so it was a good playoff bracket. We knew they were going to be tough competition, and we’re so familiar with each other. We played each other six times in the last two years, and every game has been tight, and tonight was tight. They come up with key hits here and there, late, and that kind of broke it open a little bit.”

The Warriors had just four hits in the game, as CV’s Megan Hyde struck out seven and walked three to get the shutout win.

“You’ve got to tip your hat to their pitcher, she moved the ball in and out, she changed speeds on and off, and we just didn’t sure the ball up enough to put pressure on them defensively,” Wesneski said. “And they were just better than us tonight. There’s nothing else you can say, they played better, and they executed. They came up with hits in situations where they had to have it, and we didn’t.”

Emmi Ward (1-for-3), Taryn Acla (1-for-2), Molly Ward (1-for-3), and Madison Hulbert (1-for-2) had the four Canton hits.

Keri Wesneski took the loss, striking out four with no walks, 11 hits, and six earned runs.

CV notched a run in the third, then scored two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. They added two more runs in the fifth, then got their final run in the seventh.

The Warriors would threaten a few times - their best chance to score came in the fourth - but couldn’t push one across.

“I think late in the game the girls’ started pressing a little bit, and once you start pressing it’s not good,” Wesneski said. “They just couldn’t stay relaxed. And I just said, ‘you know, one run at a time, you know, you’re not going to get a six run swing, just chip away.’”

In the first Emmi Ward led off with a walk, and got all the way to third, but Hyde got back to back strikeouts to end the threat.

In the fourth Wesneski would appear to reach on an error when an infield fly ball was flubbed. As it rolled to the catcher, Wesneski tried for second, but was thrown out.

Molly Ward, though, got things going with a single, though she was caught out at second off a Sara Saar fielder’s choice.

Mae Kinner and Hulbert kept things going with a walk, and a hit to load the bases, but Hyde got a final strikeout to end the threat.

Canton would get runners on in the fifth and seventh, but nobody past first base.

“I wish them the best of luck,” Wesneski said about CV. “They got a good team, and their class, all their coaches and girls are classy.”

As for his Warriors, he felt they left it all on the field.

“The effort was there,” Wesneski said. “They hustled, they played hard. And that’s all you can ask or as a coach, is they can give you everything they got, and don’t leave anything on the field. I always tell them that, no regrets.”
