LITTLE LEAGUE: JONES 2-RUN DOUBLE PUSHES TOWANDA PAST WELLSBORO (2022-06-28)

Northern Tier Sports Report
TOWANDA — It was an extra innings pitcher’s duel in Towanda, but in the top of the seventh Hagen Jones broke a 2-2 tie with a 2-run double to give Towanda their 4-2 win in Majors all-star baseball action Tuesday.

Gage Evans had a home run, while Boom Thompson also had a double with a run scored. The two worked the pitcher’s mound for Towanda, with Evans starting, going 3 2/3-innings, allowing two runs and striking out five. Thompson went 3 1/3-innings, allowing no runs, with seven strikeouts.

Shane Maghamez, Harper Welles, Brad Assante-DiCupillo, Blayke Spencer, and Jason Wickwire all had hits for Towanda. Spencer scored the tying run, while Baylee Clark scored the go ahead run.

Evans got things going for Towanda, as he hit a 2-out home run in the top of the first, but in the bottom half of the inning Wellsboro knotted things up with Madden Mascho scoring.

Wellsboro would take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third as Vinny Arena scored.

The 1-run lead stuck until the top of the fifth, as Spencer led off with a single. He would later take home on a 2-out passed ball to knot the game up.

After a scoreless sixth, Wickwire got things going for Towanda in the seventh with a 1-out single. Thompson then doubled to put runners on second and third.

That set up Jones’ deep centerfield double, which scored Clark - running for Wickwire - and Thompson to make it 4-2.

In the bottom half of the seventh Wellsboro would get two on with two outs, but Thompson got a pop out to Assante-DiCupillo to secure the win.

Towanda will face the winner of Southern Tioga and Alleghany Mountain on Thursday.
