LITTLE LEAGUE: TOWANDA MAJORS TOP TUNKHANNOCK TO REACH FINAL (2022-06-29)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WYSOX — Towanda used some late game hitting to pull out in front of Tunkhannock, then held on in the sixth to win 5-4 in majors all-star softball bracket play Wednesday.

The win puts Towanda in the driver’s seat, as Tunkhannock will have to play the winner of the consolation bracket final for the right to take on Towanda for the title. That game will be Friday.

Towanda’s next game will be Sunday at 2 p.m. If they lose, the next game will be at 4:30 p.m. Towanda needs to just win one of the next two games to claim a district title.

Bryn Vargason went 2-for-3 with a 2-run home run, while striking out 10 in the circle to get the win. Mary-Kate Eberlin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, Molly Roberts was 2-for-2 with a run scored, and Kendal Cook went 1-for-1 with a run scored.

Tunkhannock scored in the top of the first, but Towanda answered in the bottom half, as Eberlin legged out an infield hit. She would steal her way around the bases, taking home on a passed ball to knot the game up.

Tunkhannock would take a lead in the top of the third with another run, and that stuck until the bottom of the fourth. Roberts led off with a him, followed by Vargason pelting her home run to put Towanda up 3-2.

Towanda continued to do damage in the bottom of the fifth as Cook ran out an infield single. Eberlin then put two runners on with a hit of her own.

Roberts then brought them in with a 2-out hit to make it 5-2. Roberts would take second on the over throw to first base.

Vargason looked to add to the lead with another hit, but Tunkhannock caught Roberts at home to get out of the inning.

Vargason would get a strikeout to open the top of the sixth, but the next three batters reached, as two of them scored to cut it to a 1-run game.

Towanda would get a second out on a ground out, then Vargason took care of things herself, striking out the final hitter to secure the win.
