THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S GREGORSKI HEADLINES STRONG LIST AS ALL-REGION 'BOYS ATHLETE OF THE SPRING' (2022-07-03)

The spring was another season, two more state titles, a Section IV record, and another honor for Corning senior Jack Gregorski, who is The Sports Reports’ 2022 All-Region "Boys Athlete of the Spring.”

Gregorski was the New York State champion in the 3,200-meter run with a new Section IV record of 8:53.92.

Gregorski anchored the Hawks’ 4x800 relay that won the Federation title in 7:49.70. He ran a 1:55.48 leg as the anchor in the relay.

Gregorski also set a school record in winning the state qualifiers in the 1600 with a time of 4:12.80.

In the 5,000 meters, the Princeton-bound Gregorski finished third in the nation with a school and Section IV record.

Owen Stewart, baseball, Notre Dame — senior:
The George Mason-bound Stewart threw four no-hitters this spring and had a year no one in the area has ever seen before.

Stewart was 7-0 on the season, with a 0.12 ERA,  and 134 strikeouts in just 59 1/3 innings. At the plate Stewart hit .426 with 26 hits, four doubles, two triples a home run and 12 RBI on the season.

Kristian Mizdail, track & field, Williamson — sophomore: Only a sophomore, Mizdail qualified for and competed in three events at the PIAA Track & Field Championships, just missing the medal stand in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. He helped his 4x800 meter relay team bring home a PIAA silver medal.

After placing second in the 3200, third in the 1600 and second in the 3200 relay at the District 4 Championships, Mizdail finished 11th in the 3200 at States, 12th in the 1600.

Dustin Hagin, track & field, Troy — senior:
Hagin went out in style for the Trojans, with two state medals and a new school record. He was fourth in the triple jump, and seventh in the 110 hurdles at the PIAA Championships.

He also won a district title in the triple jump, and nearly made states in the long jump, finishing third at districts.

Micah Chandler, track & field, Waverly — sophomore: Chandler won the 400-meter hurdles at the Section IV State Qualifier, then finished fifth in the event at the N.Y. State Championships. He also ran on Waverly’s winning 400- and 1,600-meter relays at the State Qualifier, but was injured running the hurdle event, and did not run in the relays at States.

Chandler also won the 400-meter hurdles, and ran on the winning 400- and 1,600-meter relays at the Class C Championships, and the IAC Championships.

Brayden Horton, baseball, Sayre — senior:  Brayden Horton had a season for the ages at the plate. He hit .509 (28 hits in 55 ABs) with 40 runs scored, seven doubles, four triples, six home runs, and 33 RBI. He walked 25 times (and struck out just six times) and was hit by a pitch nine times for a .674 on-base percentage. He had a slugging percentage of 1.109, and a staggering OPS of 1.783.

A slick-fielding catcher with a strong arm, teams only attempted six stolen bases against him on the season. He threw out one runner attempting to steal, and picked three off the bases. … So valued behind the plate, Horton only appeared on the mound once this season. He threw five shutout innings for the win, striking out 11, walking two and allowing just two hits.

Lucas Horton, baseball, Sayre — junior: Lucas Horton was the best two-way baseball player in the region. He hit .467 (28 hits in 60 ABs) with 35 runs scored, six doubles, two triples, two home runs, and 33 RBI. He walked 27 times and was hit by pitches twice for an on-base percentage of .620. He also had a .733 slugging percentage for an OPS of 1.353.

On the mound, Horton posted a 6-0 record with a 0.83 ERA. He fanned 67 and walked 13 in 42 1/3 innings, allowing only 33 hits. Opponents hit .200 against him.

Mikey Wandell, baseball, Newark Valley — senior: Wandell had an incredible season on the diamond — both at the plate and on the mound. He batted .563 (31-for-55) with nine doubles, two home runs and a triple, and 28 RBI.

On the mound, he struck 96 batters in 38 ⅔ innings and posted a 3-2 record with a 0.94 ERA.

Jonny Sherwood, track & field, Newark Valley: — senior: Sherwood’s versatility allowed him to compete successfully in six different events. He would win IAC titles in the 1600- and 3200-meter runs, and the 3,000 steeplechase.

Sherwood would go on to compete in the steeplechase at the Class C meet, winning by more than a minute, then added the Section IV overall title. At the state championships, he placed fourth in Division 2.

Ethan Hart, lacrosse, Corning — senior: 
Hart scored 54 goals and added 15 assists for the Corning laxers this spring.

He was a first-team all-league pick and he was a U.S. Lacrosse All-American.

Landen Burch, baseball, Corning — senior: Burch hit .417 with 28 RBI on the year, with nine doubles and four home runs, striking out just five times all season, while walking 11 times.

On the mound, the Old Dominion recruit had a 0.86 ERA with a 4-0 mark and 48 strikeouts in 24 innings.

Chris Grimaldi, lacrosse, Corning — junior:
Grimaldi scored 57 goals and added 27 assists this year — leading the region both categories for the season — in his first season of varsity lacrosse for the Hawks.

Only a junior, Grimaldi is committed to Division I UMass.

Kayleb Bechy, track & field, Waverly — Waverly: Bechy gave track & field a try this spring for the first time, and by the end of the season found himself at the New York State Championships in two events. Bechy ran the opening leg on Waverly’s 400-meter relay team that won the IAC title, the Class C title, and won the gold at the Section IV State Qualifier. The relay finished 10th at States.

Bechy finished second in the 100-meter dash at the Section IV State Qualifier to earn a trip to States, where he finished 20th in a personal-best time of 11.15 seconds.  He won the 100-meter dash title at the Class C Championships, and was second in the 200-meter dash at the IAC Championships. He won the 100- and 200-meter sprints at the IAC South Large School Divisional meet
