NTL GOLF: WYALUSING'S SALSMAN, FUHREY FINISH STRONG AT D4 CHAMPIONSHIPS (2022-10-01)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WILLIAMSPORT — Wyalusing’s duo of Nick Salsman and Brody Fuhrey made a run for the Regional qualifying spots during the District IV Golf Championships on Saturday, but both came up just short.

Salsman shot an 83 to finish plus-32 for the tournament, one stroke out of the playoff to qualify for regionals to take eighth. Fuhrey shot 84 on day two to finish plus-34, three strokes back.

“I’m incredibly proud of both Brody and Nick today,” said Wyalusing coach Brent Keyes. “We had kind of a tough day as a team at team districts on Thursday, but they just came in with the right mindset. They were really relaxed from the time we got in to the car right through hole 18. They just felt really comfortable, and I’m really proud of them for gutting it out.”

Salsman had two birdies, on the par-4 first hole, and another on the par-4 14th hole. He also had six pars on the round, including four straight from the ninth hole to the 12th.

On the 18th hole Salsman reached the green in regulation, but went hard for the birdie putt, pushing it past the hole. He two-putted back up for a bogey, but a part would have gotten him in the playoff.

However, Keyes said he wasn’t disappointed.

“I don’t think he was looking at it that way,” he said. “He was happy he played so well.”

Fuhrey also had two birdies, one on the par-4 seventh hole, and another on the par-4 14th hole. He finished his final round of high school golf with six pars, including on the 18th hole.

“Brody has been a cornerstone for our program from the beginning,” said Keyes. “He’s the only one who came in with golf experience when we started. He improved, and put in a lot of time with golf, and with Wyalusing golf. I’ve enjoyed getting to know him, we have a great relationship. His family has been super supportive of me, and of golf, and I just think him for those efforts.”

Fuhrey may be graduating, but the Rams will return the rest of the golfers they had districts next season, especially Salsman, who finished the 2022 season with the third best average in the NTL.

“He’s improved immensely,” Keyes said about Salsman. “He’s got a real passion for golf, a great disposition, a great demeanor, and we’re hoping we can build on this for him.”
