THE SPORTS REPORTS: CORNING'S McKANE NAMED GIRLS REGIONAL 'ATHLETE OF THE FALL;' THREE BRADFORD COUNTY GIRLS MAKE THE LIST (2022-12-27)

Doling out awards is usually a grueling task, but every once in a while an athlete makes it pretty easy.

Corning junior Angela McKane is one of those athletes, and she headlines The Sports Reports’ 2022 All-Region Girls Baker’s Dozen Regional “Athletes of the Fall” as the “Athlete of the Fall.”

What hasn’t McKane done this year, and in her career?

There is almost no pool in Section IV that doesn’t have her name atop the pool record list. In fact, at the state meet in the 100 fly she was almost a full second under the old pool record, though the Federation champion was also below the time and is the new pool record-holder.

McKane won the 50 free federation title at States. She won her second straight 100 fly public school championship.

McKane hit the automatic All-American time in the 100 fly to become an All-American for the second straight year, and she also hit the All-American consideration time in the 50 free.

She is now a four-time state medalist, and three-time state champion over the past two years. And, the junior still has another year to add to her resume.

Sarah Lawson, junior, Corning cross country: Lawson was a state medalist after taking sixth in Class AA in a time of 18:02.60.  She also helped the Lady Hawks tie the best finish in school history with a fourth-place finish at States. … Lawson was also a STAC and Section IV champion.

Mira Kittle, freshman, Waverly swimming: Kittle, who is already putting herself in the conversation on the best swimmers to come out of Waverly, broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke in the first meet of the season on Sept. 1. Nine days later — at the Wolverine Invite, she lowered that record, and also broke the school-record in the 50 free. She would lower both school records again later in the year. Kittle also swam on a pair of school record-setting relays at Class B Championships.

Kittle became the first Waverly freshman — boy or girl — to qualify for States, qualifying in the backstroke and the 50 free. She finished 23rd at States in the 50 free, and 30th in the backstroke.

Jenna DiNardo, senior, Corning volleyball: DiNardo was the setter for the Hawks and had 503 assists on the year. She also had 284 digs and 117 points. She also could be a force at the net at times, getting eight kills in the sub-regional game as she tipped over on two catching the defense off guard.

Darby Stetter, senior, NPL volleyball: Stetter collected 304 kills, 175 points with 48 aces, 303 digs and 305 serve receptions on the season. The Lady Mounties cruised through the NTL, going 14-0 in the league to win the Large-School title, then avenged a loss in last year’s District IV final to reclaim the AA championship. NPL won their first-round match in the state playoffs before falling in the quarterfinals.

Aislyn Williams, senior, Canton volleyball: Williams helped an injury-plagued Canton team rally to retain the NTL Small School title, despite some late season bumps. They also got back to the district title match. Williams did whatever was asked of her — setting, serving, blocking, hitting - and helped the Warriors salvage their season. She registered 141 kills, 250 assists, 201 digs, 232 points, 73 aces, 33 blocks, and 155 serve-receives.

Gracelyn Laudermilch, sophomore, NEB cross country: Laudermilch went undefeated in the NTL dual meets, won the NTL Championships Invite, broke the 19-minute 5K barrier, and was district runner-up. She also led the Panthers to a dominant season, winning league and district titles.

Emily Hanrahan, senior, Elmira soccer: Hanrahan, who is committed to play soccer at Division I St. Joseph’s, led the region in scoring this year and through the first third of the year she scored every goal for the Express. She’s a 50-plus goal scorer in her career.

Kennedy Westbrook, senior, Waverly soccer:  Westbrook, who will play at Division I New Jersey Institute of Technology in the fall, scored 17 goals and dished out eight assists, while providing defensive support for the Lady Wolverines. … Westbrook, who had 50 career goals, played sweeper the majority of the time this  season, but saw time on all three lines.

Olivia Haley, junior, Wyalusing soccer: Wyalusing’s Olivia Haley had more than 30 goals this year and has already broken the Rams school record, scoring 67 goals in her career as just a junior.

Sophia Palladino, senior, Owego volleyball: The senior outside hitter registered 182 kills, 79 digs and 29 aces in 16 matches.

Tori Stratton, sophomore, Williamson soccer / Cowanesque Valley cross country: Tori Stratton scored 11 goals for the Lady Warriors, including two two-goal games, and a hat trick in a win over Campbell-Savona. She also had four assists.

On the cross country circuit, Stratton placed eighth at the NTL meet (22:14.20), 15th at the District IV Championship (20:59.30) and qualified for the State Meet, where she finished 147th.

Erin McDonald, junior, Owego soccer: McDonald scored 14 goals before missing the final five games of the season with a knee injury. Following her injury, she continued to contribute by offering her knowledge and skills to "help coach" the offense.
