NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: ROUGH 4TH QUARTER DOOMS CANTON IN LOSS TO NP-LIBERTY (2021-02-24)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — Canton was held to four fourth quarter points as NP-Liberty rallied for the 60-54 NTL boys’ basketball win Wednesday.

The Mountaineers are now two games up on Wyalusing in the standings with three games left. They face the Rams Thursday with a 6 p.m. start, a win there would clinch them the title.

However, they had to get past Canton first, which proved to be no easy task. The Warriors, who had been hot recently, stayed hot, making nine 3-pointers on the night.

Isaiah Niemczyk had 18 points to lead Canton, with Caiden Williams netting 16 points. Cooper Kitchen chipped in with 13 as Tyler Jannone scored four, and Weston Bellows notched three.

Noah Spencer led NPL with 18 points followed by Derek Litzelman with 14. Brandon Thompson scored 11, Koleton Roupp netted nine, Colton Litzelman notched five and Kevin Alexander rounded things out with three.

The Mounties were even hotter than Canton from deep, connecting on 11 3-pointers in the contest.

In the first quarter, though, it was the Warriors coming out on top. Behind 10 points from Williams and eight from Kitchen, they led 23-20 after the first horn.

NPL hit six 3-pointers to keep in touch with Canton, as Derek had three of them for nine points.

Things cooled off a little in the second quarter as the two teams combined for 25 points. NPL cut it to 35-33 at the half behind seven points from Thompson.

Williams stayed hot for Canton, hitting two 3-pointers, to lead them in the second frame.

The Warriors re-established themselves in the third, out scoring NPL 15-13, as Niemczyk had seven points. The Mounties saw five different players score in the quarter, but nobody had more than three points.

Up 50-46 going into the fourth, Canton looked in position to pull out the win. However, they struggled to score in the final frame, netting just four points.

That allowed NPL to pull ahead, as they had 14 points, including a 6-for-7 performance from the charity stripe.

Spencer led the way, hitting two 3-pointers en route to 10 points in the quarter.

Canton gets another shot at NP-Liberty on Saturday, as they travel there for a 3:30 p.m. start.
