NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: BENNETT, BOTTS LEAD WYALUSING PAST NP-MANSFIELD IN OT (2021-02-24)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WYALUSING — Callie Bennett hit a big 3-pointer in overtime, while her and Layla Botts went 6-for-10 from the line, to propel Wyalusing past NP-Mansfield 44-41 in NTL girls’ basketball action Wednesday.

The Tigers rallied from a three point deficit at the half, but it was the Rams pulling out, and sweeping the season series against NP-Mansfield.

Bennett finished with 13 points, five boards and two steals to lead the Lady Rams, while Catherine Brown had eight points, four boards and two steals.

Olivia Leichliter netted seven points and seven rebounds, with Madison Putnam getting six points, seven boards and two blocks.

Hailey Jayne finished with five points and three steals as Botts had five points, four assists and two steals. Botts was also 4-for-5 from the free throw line in overtime to help ice the game.

Payton Chapel led NPM with 13 points followed by Sarah Spohn with 11. Elizabeth Kahl added eight, Ashley Brubaker netted seven and Grace Farrer notched two.

It was a low scoring first quarter as the Rams led 7-6, thanks to in part to a Bennett 3-pointer. Brown opened things up a bit for Wyalusing in the second quarter, as she hit three buckets for six points to help them to a 17-14 lead at the midway point.

Chapel had two 3-pointers in the second, part of a trio of first half 3-balls, to keep the Tigers close.

In the third Putnam and Bennett combined for eight points as they pushed Wyalusing’s advantage to 28-24.

The Rams were held to just seven points in the fourth quarter, though, as Spohn netted five points for the Tigers as they rallied to tie the game at 35-all.

The win should cement Wyalusing’s place in the District IV, Class AA standings, where they currently sit in fifth. If things hold as they are now they would travel to NEB on Tuesday for a quarterfinal game.

That could change, though, as the top four are pretty tight, so it looks like it will come down to the final day.
