THE WEEK AHEAD: BUSY WEEK AS TRACK AND FIELD STARTS, WHILE TOWANDA AND WYALUSING COME OFF REMOTE (2021-04-04)

Northern Tier Sports Report
A busy week ahead as track and field starts, while Towanda and Wyalusing should come off remote and into the fold.

TRACK & FIELD

Tuesday, April 6

Williamson at Canton, 4 p.m.: The only track meet on Tuesday as a couple others were postponed. In a battle of the Warriors the two teams will put their athletes out there to see what they have after a few weeks of practice. Two years ago Williamson had one of the better girls’ programs in the NTL, with Canton looking to build both programs this season.

Friday, April 9

Wellsboro at Towanda, 4 p.m.: A doozy to start off with for the Knights as Wellsboro has one of the best programs in the league. Towanda are the boys’ defending league champions, and while dual meets don’t decide the league champs, it could be a preview of what to come next month at the NTL Championships.

Williamson at Wyalusing, 4 p.m.: The Rams were second in the boys’ race, and third in the girls’ race, for the NTL title two years ago. They start things at home as they come off remote learning, and two weeks off, with the Warriors continuing their season opening road trip.

Troy at Canton, 4 p.m.: Two years ago the Trojan girls were second in the NTL, with the boys taking a surprising third. They will look to build on those performances starting on Friday at Canton.

NEB at Athens, 4 p.m.: The Panthers start the season on the road at the powerhouse Wildcats, who are the defending girls’ NTL champions. NEB will be looking to build from what they had two seasons ago.

BASEBALL

Tuesday, April 6

Towanda (0-0) at Athens (1-2), 4:30 p.m.: The Black Knights open their season on the road agains the defending NTL Champions. It’s tough to know what to expect from the Wildcats, in their first three games they’ve had a close loss to Canton, a big win over Troy and then were routed by Sayre.

Canton (3-0) at Sayre, (1-0), 4:30 p.m.: The biggest match-up of the season yet as both teams finished 1-2 in the standings for Small School in 2019. Sayre are the defending champions, and played like it in their 14-1 win over Athens, while Canton has started 3-0, finding a way to win close games.

NEB (0-1) at CV (0-3), 4:30 p.m.: Somebody has to come out of here with a win, even though there’s been one tie already. The Panthers opened their season with a tough walk off loss to the Tigers, while CV is no stranger to close losses, losing a 1-run game to Troy and a 2-run game to Canton.

Wellsboro (0-1) at Troy (1-1), 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans will look to rebound after a tough loss to Athens after their season opening win at CV. The Hornets suffered a close loss to Canton in their season opener, despite leading by five runs late in the game.

Thursday, April 8

NEB (0-1) at Williamson (0-0-1), 4:30 p.m.: The Panthers hit the trail again to Tioga County. It’s been a unique season for Williamson so far, they had the very rare tie with NP-Mansfield, and then had to cancel their game with Wellsboro due to too few players.

Troy (1-1) at Athens (1-2), 4:30 p.m.: These two teams meet again two weeks after their first game. Athens jumped out to a big lead in that game, ultimately winning 12-2, as the Trojans look to get revenge.

Friday, April 9

Wyalusing (0-0) at Towanda (0-0), 4:30 p.m.: The season opener for the Rams, and the home opener for the Knights. The Knights will be looking to build off their playoff appearance two seasons ago, while Wyalusing has a goal of making the playoffs this season.

Muncy (1-0) at Canton (3-0), 4:30 p.m.: A big match-up between the second and third rated teams in the District IV, Class AA standings. The Warriors are currently second, but with Sayre and the Indians lined up this week, it could go a long way to shaking up the standings.

Saturday, April 10

Jersey Shore (0-0) at Towanda (0-0), 11 a.m.: The Knights welcome Class AAAA power Jersey Shore for a tough non-league contest. Towanda has a busy start to the week with three games in five days.

Wyalusing (0-0) at Elk Lake (0-0), 11 a.m.: Back to back games to start for the Rams, as they hit the road for a non-league contest at Elk Lake.

Troy (1-1) at NEB (0-1), 11:30 a.m.: A make-up from two weeks ago due to rain, hopefully the showers hold off for this one. It will be the third game of the week for both teams so pitching rotations could get interesting.

SOFTBALL

Tuesday, April 6

Towanda (0-0) at Athens (3-0), 4:30 p.m.: The Knights open the season on the road against a hot Athens team that has mercy ruled their last two opponents. They opened the season with a close win over Canton.

Canton (1-2) at Sayre (0-1), 4:30 p.m.: A chance for the Warriors to even up their record after their big come from behind win over NP-Liberty. They opened the season with two close losses against Athens and CV. Sayre lost their opener to Athens.

NEB (1-0) at CV (2-0), 4:30 p.m.: A big early season Small School game as both teams look to compete for the title. CV has a big win over Troy, and a close one over Canton, so far this season, with the Panthers holding on to defeated NP-Liberty in their opener.

Wellsboro (1-0) at Troy (0-2), 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans look to get their first win of the season as they host the Hornets. They’ve started the year with losses to CV and Athens. Wellsboro opened the season with a win over Williamson.

Thursday, April 8

NEB (1-0) at Williamson (1-1), 4:30 p.m.: The Warriors started the season with a win over NPL, then lost to league power Wellsboro. They could prove a tough opponent for NEB as both teams had close wins against the Mounties.

Troy (0-2) at Athens (3-0), 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans will look to avenge and earlier season loss as they hit the road. The Wildcats won 13-0 the first time around.

Friday, April 9

Wyalusing (0-0) at Sayre (0-1), 4:30 p.m.: The season opener for the Rams as they look to defend their 2019 Division-I title. They will travel to Sayre, who will be looking to rebound from their season opening loss to Athens.

Saturday, April 10

Wyalusing (0-0) at Towanda (0-0), 11 a.m.: A big early season match-up between two Division-I foes. Both teams have high aspirations for the season so this could prove to be an important one looking back late in the season.

Troy (0-2) at NEB (1-0), 11:30 a.m.: A make-up from last week. It will be the home opener for the Panthers, along with it being the third game of the week for both teams.

Canton (1-2) at Benton (0-1), 2 p.m.: A chance for Canton to see some of their fellow Class A teams that they may run into in districts. A win like this would help their District IV standings.

Towanda (0-0) at CV (0-1), 4 p.m.: The Knights open their season with a long road trip to CV. The Indians lost to Galeton 4-1 in their season opener, then fell to Wellsboro 5-0.

Thursday, April 8

NP-Liberty (0-0) at Towanda (0-0), 4 p.m.: Both teams come into this week without a match under their belts. The Knights will look to start things off strong in their home opener.

Saturday, April 10

Towanda (0-0) at Tunkhannock, 11 a.m.: The third match of the week for Towanda as they look to make up lost time. The Class AAA Tigers are always a tough non-league opponent.
