Northern Tier Sports ReportCANTON — Troy clinched a third straight NTL Large School title and retained the Old Shoe in their 49-6 win over Canton during NTL football action Friday.
It was 42-0 at the half as Mason Smith had four touchdown passes and one scoring on the day for the Trojans.
Troy opened the scoring with a 9-yard touchdown hook-up from Smith to Trey Teribury as Gavin Lykon-Leffler made it 7-0 after the extra point.
Smith then punched one in from 8-yards out midway through the first with Lykon-Leffler’s kick making it 14-0.
With eight seconds left in the opening frame Smith hit Spencer Martin for a 29-yard scoring hook-up to make it 21-0 after Lykon-Leffler’s kick.
Brendan Gilliland returned to action on Friday and found the end zone on a 26-yard run, making it 28-0 after Lykon-Leffler’s kick.
A Smith to Smith hook-up - Mason to Roland - for 23-yards made it 35-0 after Lykon-Leffler’s kick with 7:30 left in the half.
Troy’s final touchdown of the first half was a 19-yard pass from Smith to Martin as Lykon-Leffler’s kick was good.
After a scoreless third quarter Martin ran one in from 12-yards out to make it 49-0 after the Lykon-Leffler kick.
Canton senior Ryder Route got to score a touchdown on his final game at home as he hauled in a 45-yard touchdown reception off an Owen Moore pass for the 49-6 Nina.
Troy will wait to see who they play in their opening round district game next weekend.
