Northern Tier Sports ReportCANTON — Canton held off a second half charge from NP-Mansfield to pick up a 34-28 win during NTL girls’ hoops action Monday. It marks the Warrior’s third straight win of the season.
“It feels good, especially getting one tonight against Mansfield,” said Canton coach Ryan Van Noy. “Mansfield is a good program. The’ve got a couple tough kids that play very, very hard, and make things difficult. And we did not play our best by any means, so to get a W tonight, considering how we played, and how we shot the ball, was definitely a positive. I think we’re heading in the right direction.”
The Warriors led 15-5 at the half, but NPM out scored them 13-9 in the third to cut the lead to six. The two teams were even in the fourth at 10 points apiece as Canton prevailed.
Canton’s Cailyn Van Noy had 14 points to lead all scorers to with six boards, and five steals with Alexis McRoberts, and Lydia Roupp scoring seven points each. McRoberts also had five rebounds.
Stella Rockwell netted four, as Cheyenne Fitch added two, while Daveian Crowley had 10 rebounds, and Danah Wesneski notched two steals.
Elaina Shaw had 12 to lead NP-Mansfield.
It was a low scoring first quarter with Canton taking a 4-2 lead as Van Noy had all four of their points.
The Warriors round the range in the second as they hit three 3-balls - one from each of Rockwell, Van Noy, and Roupp - to out score NPM 11-3 to build the 10-point lead as they went into the locker rooms.
Shaw got hot in the third, nailing three 3-pointers for the Tigers, with Canton just hitting three field goals in the frame.
In the fourth Canton had a chance to put it away but struggled from the line - they went just 4-for-16 - but held defensively, holding NPM to just two made field goals.
The Warriors were just 7-for-22 from the charity stripe in the contest.
Canton (5-1) will host their annual Christmas Tournament next week with Galeton, Sullivan County, and NP-Liberty. The games are Monday and Tuesday with 6 p.m. start.
