Northern Tier Sports ReportTROY — Troy gave Athens a scare on Wednesday as they fell, 41-35, during NTL wrestling action Wednesday.
The Trojans gave up four forfeits but had the edge in matches wrestled, 5-2.
“I’m very proud of our young men,” Troy coach Tony Carter said, as this was the Trojans’ second match on back to back nights.
“We as coaches can see the incremental improvements in practice throughout the season, but it’s nice to see those improvements play out in a tough match-up with a great squad like Athens,” Carter continued. “Tonight was a complete team effort from our boys, and they should be proud of themselves.”
Keagan Kerr (133), Logunn Heasley (145), Hunter Watson (160), and Reed Palmer (285) all had falls, as Ryan Howard (172) scored a forfeit.
Garret Parks (114) earned a 20-4 tech fall.
For Athens Chace VanDyke (107), Zaine Campbell (127), Treyton Barrett (152), and Brendan Cooke (189) each had a forfeit, as Lucas Persun (139 scored a fall. Landon Layman (215) notched a tech fall.
VanDyke opened the match with a forfeit, followed by Parks getting his 20-4 tech over Joshua Saxon in 5:15.
After no match at 121 Campbell scored his forfeit for a 12-5 lead.
Kerr cut it to 12-11 with his pin of Connor Garrison in 3:22.
Persun made it 18-11 with his fall over Wilder Koch in 1:40, but Heasley came back with a fall in 3:28 against Wyatt Clink for a 1-score match.
Barrett then notched his forfeit to make it 30-17.
Watson’s fall over Isreal Sensenig in 1:41, followed by Howard’s forfeit cut it to 30-29.
Cooke’s forfeit put the Wildcats up 36-29, then Layman finished things off with his tech in 4:31 over James Deakin for a 41-29 score.
Palmer ended things strong for Troy, use a second period reversal to pin Brendan Comstock in 2:22 for the 41-35 final.
Earlier in the week Troy fell to Southern Columbia, 63-12.
Parks (107) had a forfeit, while Kerr (133) scored a fall for Troy’s points.
Troy (1-5) will travel to the Flynn Duals at Towanda with an 11 p.m. start on Saturday.
