Northern Tier Sports ReportCATAWISSA — Towanda came within a hair’s breadth of upsetting Southern Columbia in the first round of the District IV Duals Wednesday, falling 34-32 in the final bout.
The Tigers had the edge in bouts, 7-6, but Towanda racked up the bonus points to make it close, as Jaydon Stranger (127), and Bryghton Yale (133) both had falls, while Mason Harbst (107), and Reese Sluyter (152) each had forfeits.
Hagen Jones (139) scored a tech fall, while Gage Evans (145) earned a decision.
Liam Gray (114) had a forfeit for Southern, as Rowan Humphrey (121) and John Quinton each scored a fall.
Brayden Andrews (160) notched a tech, as Caius Morrow (172), and Greg Fulmer (189) both scored majors.
Braylin Smith (285) got the win for the Tigers with a decision.
Harbst, and Gray opened the match with back to back forfeits.
Humphrey then pinned Brydon Fessenden in 1:30 to put Southern up 12-6, but Stranger came back with a pin of Aiden Brown in 1:55 to tie things back up.
That sparked five straight wins for Towanda, as Yale followed up with a 2:45 fall over Willard Wigtowicz.
Jones added a 16-0 tech fall in 4:55 over Gavin Trometter, followed by Evans beating Gavin Richards 3-1. All the scoring was in the second period, with Evans using a reversal, followed by a penalty point to get the win.
Sluyter then took the forfeit for the 32-12 Towanda lead.
That’s when Souther’s rally started, beginning with Andrews scoring a 15-0 tech fall in 1:25 over Towanda’s Joey Montonya.
Morrow pulled out a 10-1 major over Kolton McPeak, followed by Fulmer winning 9-0 over Dillon Sbragia to make it 32-25.
The Tigers cut it to one with Quinton’s fall over Brennan in 2:36.
That set up the heavyweight match with Smith beating Dom Miller 7-0. Smith got a first period takedown, then added an escape, and a takedown in the third for the victory.
