HERSHEY — Towanda’s Kaylen Sluyter was able to stay alive at the PIAA Girls’ Wrestling Championships Thursday.

Sluyter lost her bout 15-0 to ELCO’s Kylee Trostle, but her first round consolation opponent didn’t make weight that morning, giving the freshman a bye into the blood round.

“It feels great, I’m glad that I made it here,” Sluyter said about being one win away from a state medal.

Trostle used a takedown and two sets of back points to go up 11-0 after the first period, then got an escape with a takedown for the tech fall.

Sluyter learned quite a bit from her first state match.

“People are going to be stronger than me, but they’re actually on my level,” she said

With the jitters out Sluyter is especially focused going into Friday.

“I’m going to warm-up a little more,” she said.
