Northern Tier Sports ReportROME — After 22 months varsity baseball returned to Panther Lane at NEB fell to defending NTL Small School champions, CV, 13-5 in their season opener Saturday.
NEB led 1-0 after the first inning, with CV scoring a run in the second to knot things up. The Indians would go up 4-1 with three runs in the third, then added three more in the top of fifth to push their lead to 7-1.
The Panthers rallied, scoring one in the bottom half of the inning, then adding three more in the sixth to make it a 7-5 game.
The Indians pulled away with a 6-run seventh.
Anthony Johnson (3-for-4) had an RBI to lead the Panthers, as Cooper Hugo (2-for-3), and Elijah DeLancey (2-for-3) also had multi-hit games. Hugo added an RBI with a run scored, as DeLancey drove in two runs.
Brad Shores (1-for-2) add an RBI, with Kohen Hugo scoring twice. Tanner Judson (1-for-4), and Ka’Ron Carr (1-for-2) also had hits.
Cooper Hugo started, and went 2 2/3-innings with four strikeouts, one walk, six hits, and four runs, while Kohen Hugo tossed the next 2 1/3-innings with four strikeouts, one walk, four hits, and three runs.
DeLancey tossed an inning with a strikeout, and a walk, while Shores came on but didn’t record an out. He allowed two hits, and five runs.
Trevor Goodenow got the final three outs, with one strikeout, one hit, and one run.
Kohen Hugo led off the first inning, then scored on a Johnson single for NEB’s 1-0 lead.
In the fifth Johnson and Cooper Hugo had back to back singles to lead things off, with DeLancey drawing a 1-out walk later.
With bases loaded and two outs Shores singled into left to bring in Johnson for their second run.
In the sixth Kohen Hugo drew a 1-out walk, then Johnson reached on an error. Cooper Hugo brought in his brother for a 7-3 score.
After an out DeLancey hit a 2-out single to drive in Johnson and Cooper Hugo to make it a 2-run game.
NEB (0-1) will host Sullivan County on Monday.
