Northern Tier Sports ReportWYSOX — Towanda fell to defending NTL Large School champions, Athens, 7-3 in their softball season opener on Saturday.
The Wildcats built a 6-0 lead with two runs in the second, three in the third and one in the fifth before the Knights answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-2.
Both teams scored a run in the seventh.
Brooklyn Evans (2-for-3) had a home run, 2-RBI, and a run scored to lead Towanda, as Molly Roberts (1-for-3) had a double with an RBI.
Maris Cobb, and Caedence Wells both scored.
Leila Cobb went the distance for Towanda with seven strikeouts, three walks, eight hits, and seven runs.
Gretchen Hiley struck out 12 in the win with two walks, and three hits.
In the sixth Evans hit a 2-out, 2-run home run to get the Knights on the scoreboard. In the seventh Wells reached, then scored on Roberts’ double for their final run.
Towanda (0-1) travels to Wyalusing on March 24.
