Armed with large rosters the Wyalusing track and field teams have high hopes for the 2026 season.
“I am really pleased with the numbers that I have on each team,” said Wyalusing coach Jim Schools. “However, we are a young team. My goal for both these teams is to get some good competition under our belts to learn the sport of track and field, and to be competitive not only individually, but also as a team in the league.”
On the boys’ side they come in with plenty of point scorers on the roster.
“On the boys side I expect several athletes to stand out,” School said. “Dylan Johns, returning state medalist, John Earle in the pole vault, Josh Palfreyman in the throws, Tyler Caplan in the jumps and sprints, Jack Fischer in the hurdles, Reuben Kinney in the javelin, Parker Cunningham in the jumps, and John Kerin, and Shay Gartland in the jumps.”
Earle had a good season last year in the pole vault, just missing states by 6-inches at districts.
“I’m really excited to build off last year’s success,” he said. “Knowing I’m right there gives me a ton of confidence and motivation. I’m working at it all the time, and focusing on what I need to improve.”
He also plans on doing other events, including the 300 hurdles.
“It adds fun and pressure free events,” said Earle. “It’s nice to not have to worry about my other events, and just compete.”
As for newcomers, Schools expects Cameron Cole, Cody Tuttle, and Dominic Trowbridge to standout in the sprints and jumps.
On the girls’ side the Rams also a few returning point scorers from last year’s team.
Megan King, and Riley Porter in the distance, Carol Scarborough, Vayda Rought, and Aletta O’Connor in the sprints, Alyssa Neagle, Ava King, and Addie Vanderpool in the jumps, with Taydin Gardner in javelin, and Storey Newell in the pole vault.
Scarborough, for one, can’t wait to get started.
“I’m super excited,” she said. “I’ve been training a lot in the offseason so I’m ready for some new PRs. My biggest focuses this year are the 400 meters, and the 4x100, and just being able to put points on the board for my other events.”
Scarborough will be busy with the 100, 200, and possibly the 4x400 also on her slate.
“My goals are just to get as many PRs as possible for my events since it’s my senior year, and my last chance,” she said. “I just want to have the best season possible.”
The senior has been doing a specific training program over the winter to help with her stamina and increase her top speed.
“I feel pretty confident,” she said.
As for the large team, the more merrier for her.
“It makes practice more competitive, and helps me to put in my best effort,” Scarborough said. “But also provides opportunities to get to know more kids at my school, and feel more involved community-wise because of the bonds formed between everyone.”
Newcomers to watch on the girls side are Jenna Morningstar in the jumps, Lia Fischer in the hurdles, and Mya King in the pole vault and jumps.
Regardless of how this year goes, Schools is certain of one thing.
“We will definitely be a different team at the end of the season compared to the beginning of the season.”
