WYALUSING — Brooklyn Evans knocked in the go-ahead running the top of the sixth inning to help Towanda to a 2-1 win over Wyalusing here Tuesday afternoon in NTL softball action.
"It was a typical Towanda-Wyalusing battle, coming down to the wire," said Towanda coach Dean Johnson.
"All credit to my girls' perseverance and grit," he noted.
"It came down to getting out of a few jams, clutch hitting when it mattered and Leila Cobb pitching a great game," added Johnson. "We’ll keep working to get better."
The Black Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when lead-off batter Payton Perry reached on an error, over to second on a passed ball, stole third base and scored on a groundout off the bat of Brooklyn Evans.
The Rams answered with a run in the home half of the first. Addison Bly led off with a single, stole second, took third on a sac bunt by Treanna Nickson, and scored on an RBI single by Kiara Millard.
Towanda's Leila Cobb and Wyalusing's Addison Fluck traded zeroes in the pitcher's circle until the top of the sixth inning.
With one out, Maris Cobb walked, stole second and scored on an RBI single by Evans to make it 2-1. Wyalusing kept it close by erasing two Towanda runners on the base paths.
Cobb retired Wyalusing in order in the sixth inning, and pitched around a lead-off error in the seventh, and stranded the winning run on second base.
Evans singled and had two RBI to lead Towanda at the plate, while Brynson Vargason doubled, and Perry and Cobb each scored a run.
Cobb allowed one run on three hits in seven innings, while striking out eight and walking four.
Bly singled, scored one run, and walked three times, while Millard singled and drove in one run, and Emily Johns singled to account for Wyalusing's three hits.
Fluck was tagged with the tough-luck loss, allowing two runs on two hits in seven innings. She fanned eight and walked three.
Wyalusing returns to action Thursday at Troy.
