WILLIAMSPORT — St. John Neumann scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out a wild, 10-9, win over Northeast Bradford here Saturday in non-league baseball action.
The Panthers took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a one-out RBI single by Kohen Hugo to plate Cooper Hugo.
After Neumann plated three runs in the home half of the first, NEB scored a run in the second inning in a rally that featured singles by Tanner Judson and Wes Alderfer.
The Panthers took a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the third inning on an unearned run, and an RBI single by Tyler Goodenow.
The lead was short-lived, however, as the Golden Knights scored three times in the bottom of third inning, then scored three more in the fourth to take a 9-4 lead.
The Panthers roared back in the top of the fifth with five runs to tie the game at 9-9. They took advantage of three base on balls and two errors, and got a big two-RBI single from Anthony Johnson to cap the rally.
Alderfer and Cooper Hugo reached base via singles in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, for NEB, and Elijah DeLancey reached base via a lead-off walk in the top of the eighth inning, but none of them advanced past second base.
Johnson, who pitched five innings in relief for NEB, retired the Knights in order in the sixth inning, then pitched around two hits and a walk in the home half of the seventh inning, before Neumann plated the game-winner in the eighth.
Judson singled twice, scored two runs, and had two RBI, while Cooper Hugo singled twice, stole two bases, scored two runs, and drove in one run, and Alderfer singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in one run to pace NEB's nine-hit attack.
Johnson singled, scored one run, stole three bases and drove in two runs for the Panthers, while Kohen Hugo singled, scored one run, and knocked in one run, Goodenow singled, scored one run, and had two RBI, DeLancey crossed the plate one, and Nate Gross stole two bases.
Johnson was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs — two earned — on four hits in five innings of work, while striking out nine and walking three.
NEB 9, Williamson 3
At Tioga Junction, Northeast Bradford blew open a pitcher's dual with eight runs in the top of the sixth inning in a 9-3 win over Williamson on Wednesday.
The only run in the first five innings came on a second-inning RBI single by Judson to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, Gross started NEB's rally with an RBI triple to make it 2-0, and scored on an error to extend the lead to 3-0.
Later in the inning, Johnson stroked a two-out RBI single, then Cooper Hugo, Kohen Hugo and Gross worked consecutive bases-loaded walks to force home runs to make it 7-0.
DeLancey capped the rally with a two-run singled to extend the advantage to 9-0.
Williamson avoided the shutout with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Gross tripled and singled, scored one run, and had two RBI, and Judson singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace NEB's eight-hit attack.
DeLancey singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI in the win, while Johnson singled, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Cooper Hugo singled and knocked in one run.
Alderfer added a single for the Panthers, while Kohen Hugo scored two runs and drove in one run, and Goodenow crossed the plate once.
Cooper Hugo earned the win for NEB, allowing two hits, while striking out seven and walking two in 5 2/3 innings of scoreless ball in the start.
NEB, now 2-2, returns to action Tuesday at Sayre.
