Northern Tier Sports ReportMANSFIELD — A 6-run third inning propelled Towanda to a 7-4 win over NP-Mansfield during NTL baseball action Monday as they secured their first victory of the season.
The Tigers led 1-0 after one, but Towanda got that run back in the top of the second. Then came their big inning to go up 7-1.
NPM chipped away in the sixth with three runs, but Towanda held them after that.
Avery Butts (2-for-3) had a double, 2-RBI, and two runs scored, with Boom Thompson (2-for-3) scoring a run.
Brad Assante (1-for-3) scored, and drove in a run, as Shane Maghamez (1-for-4), Lucas Vincent, and Hudson Stevens also crossed home. Gage Evans and Hagen Jones each had an RBI, as well.
Thompson went the distance on the mound, striking out two with one walk, six hits, and four runs, three of them earned.
Butts led off the second with hit, and scored on a Jones ground out to level things up at 1-1.
Thompson would lead off the third with a walk, then scored on an Assante single for the 2-1 lead. Vincent then walked, followed by a Maghamez hit to load the bases.
An Evans ground out brought in Assante, then Butts brought in two runs with a double to make it 5-1.
A Stevens walk was followed by Butts scoring on a passed ball. Stevens then crossed home on a passed ball himself for the 6-run lead.
Towanda (1-3) is at Canton on Wednesday.
