Northern Tier Sports ReportEAST TROY — Towanda softball won their sixth straight, beating Troy 8-0 during NTL action Wednesday.
The Knights pushed one across in the first, then added four more in the second to take a 5-0 lead.
The defenses settled in until the top of the seventh, when Towanda finished the game with three runs for the 8-0 final.
“All the credit to the girls,” said Towanda coach Dean Johnson. “They’re doing what we ask them to do. We’re executing well, I mean, I can’t say enough good things right now. We’re really kind of in a groove.”
Towanda’s Leila Cobb tossed a 1-hit shutout with no walks, and six strikeouts.
Brooklyn Evans (2-for-4) had two doubles with two runs scored for the Knights as Payton Perry (3-for-4) scored twice and drove in two runs.
Brynsen Vagason (1-for-3) had a double with 2-RBI, and a run scored, as Maris Cobb (1-for-4) drove in three runs.
Leila Cobb (1-for-4), Molly Roberts (1-for-3), and Hannah Crawford all scored, as Caedence Wells drove in a run.
“We kind of knew what she was going to throw coming in, so we were kind of prepared for it,” Johnson said. “They’re just being aggressive in the box, so when we get the chance to attack.”
Sydnee Bellows (1-for-3) had a hit for Troy as Erinn Knapp took the loss. She struck out two with three walks, eight hits, and eight runs, four of which were earned.
In the top of the first Towanda went with two outs as Evans lined a double, then scored on a Vargason double for the 1-0 lead.
Leila Cobb led off the second by reaching on an error, followed by Roberts singling, with Crawford drawing a walk to load the bases.
Two batters later Perry singled in Leila Cobb and Roberts to make it 3-0.
A Maris Cobb hit would bring in Crawford and Perry for a 5-0 lead.
Perry would lead off the seventh with a hit, then scored on a Maris Cobb ground out.
Evans got the rally going again with a double, then scored on an error off the bat of Vargason. Vargason later scored on a Wells ground out for the 8-0 final.
Towanda (6-1) will host Wyalusing on Thursday as Troy (3-4) travels to Midd-West on Saturday.
