ROME — Canton softball held off NEB to take the 6-5 win during NTL action Tuesday.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead but Canton chipped away, scoring two runs in each of the second and third to tie things up, then adding one run in each of the fourth and fifth for a 6-4 lead.
NEB rallied in the seventh, getting one run across, but couldn’t get the tying one.
Lucy Proseus (2-for-4) had 2-RBI for Canton as Trinity Acla (2-for-3) scored and drove in a run.
Jaylee Ward (1-for-4), Lexi McMurray (1-for-1), and Nevaeh Vroman (1-for-4) all had triples. Vroman, and Ward both scored, as Vroman, and McMurray each drove in a run.
Raya Preston (1-for-3) scored a run with Lindley Sechrist (1-for-4) and Alyssa May (1-for-3) both getting hits.
Ward got the win in the circle, striking out four with six walks, seven hits, and five runs, one of which was earned.
Zoey Thetga (3-for-3) had the hot bat for NEB as she was perfect from the plate and scored a run.
Ava Lambert (1-for-3) had a double with an RBI as Madilyn Callear (1-for-4) also drove in a run.
Mackenzie Clark (1-for-5), Karmyn McPherson, Kristina Larnard, and Jaylin Wheaton (1-for-2) all crossed home.
Larnard took the loss, striking out one with two walks, 11 hits, and six runs.
In the first Clark had a 1-out single to get the rally going for NEB as she scored on an error off the bat of McPherson.
After a second out Thetga had a single, followed by McPherson scoring on a passed ball. Larnard then brought in Thetga for a 3-0 lead.
A Lambert double drove in Larnard for the 4-0 lead.
Vroman led off the Canton second with a triple followed by a Tara Gilbert walk. Proseus then singled in Vroman with Gilbert scoring on a sacrifice fly for the 4-2 ball game.
Ward led off the top of the third with a triple followed by Preston drawing a walk. Ward would score off a Vroman ground out.
After a second out Proseus singled in Preston to make it 4-4.
Acla opened the fourth with a hit, then scored on an error off the bat of Ward to give the Warriors the lead.
Gilbert would reach on an error in the fifth then scored on a McMurray triple for a 6-4 lead.
Wheaton would draw a 1-out walk then scored two batters later on a Callear single to make it a 1-run game.
Ward would induce back to back outs to get the win.
