MILTON — Last year Wyalusing's Jonathan Earle missed states by one spot in the pole vault, this year he made sure that wasn't going to happen again as the senior claimed gold at the District IV Track and Field Championships Saturday.
Earle won the pole vault at 13-feet, 6-inches and was part of a trio of Rams who made the podium in the event.
"It feels awesome," remarked Earle. "It just feels like everything's coming together right now."
Earle was clean through the first four heights while the top seed, Warrior Run's Ryan Kemock at a miss at 12-feet, 6-inches, giving Earle the pole position.
Kemock then wasn't able to get over the bar at 13-feet, securing the win for Earle.
"I felt good all the way through," Earle said. "I didn't really feel like I had a bad jump today."
Hitting the state standard of 13-feet, 6-inches was also special for him.
"I felt great knowing that I didn't just make it to states because I was top two, but actually hitting the standard," he said.
It was one of the smallest pole vault fields in district history, with just 11 vaulters, with the field narrowed down to the three within 20 minutes.
"It helped," Earle said about not having to wait around to get going. "You didn't just sit there and get cold, but mindset wise, it didn't really change anything."
He had a good first attempt at 14-feet, getting high enough to clear it, and giving him confidence he can do so down at Shippensburg.
"I just have to stay consistent," he said. "Running hard once you get towards 14."
Teammate Sullivan McCracken took home third with a 12-foot jump, while Tyler Grover was eighth at 11-feet.
Earle enjoyed having those guys with him Saturday, and all throughout the season.
"These guys have made it my best year ever," he said. "It's just so much better having three guys here, even if they weren't going to be medalists."
Also for the boys Tyler Caplan was sixth in the triple jump at 41-feet, 8-inches while Dylan Johns took seventh in the high jump at 6-feet, 1-inch.
Aiden Neiley ran a personal best 2:03.67 to take 10th in the 800 with Joshua Palfreyman (120-feet, 11-inches) and Jasai Latini (108-feet, 7-inches) going 13th and 16th in the discus.
Jack Fischer (44.76) took 15th in the 300 hurdles with Parker Cunningham (46.45) 22nd, while Dominic Trowbridge (24.24) was 16th in the 200.
The boys 4x100 (45.86) was 11th, with the 4x400 (3:48.10) 15th. The 400 meter relay was made up of Johns, Trowbridge, John Kerin, and Caplan, while the mile relay featured Caplan, Neiley, Fischer, and Cunningham.
On the girls' side Lia Fischer medaled in the 100 hurdles, taking fourth in 16.35. She was also ninth in the triple jump at 34-feet, with Ava King (31-feet, 9 3/4-inches) taking 15th.
Jenna Morningstar (4-feet, 10-inches) was 10th in the high jump.
The girls 4x100 was 11th in 52.79 with a team of Carl Scarborough, Morningstar, Fischer, and Vayda Rought.
