FOOTBALL: TROY BRINGS IN ATHENS FOR BIG NTL TILT (2026-09-03)

It was a tough opener for Troy (0-1) last week, and the follow up against Athens (1-0) this week won't be any easier.

The Trojans are coming off a tough loss to Montoursville while Athens rolled past Wyalusing in their season opening win.

"There was a lot of good learning moments to take away from last weeks game," Troy coach Jim Smith said. "We hurt ourselves with mistakes and five turnovers. Despite that we still gave ourselves a chance in the fourth quarter to win the game. I was happy that they kept fighting, we just have to do a better job limiting those mistakes."

Athens features Connor Davidson at quarterback, who threw for four touchdowns last week and returned a punt to pay dirt, as well.

"Athens is an athletic and confident team, they look good," said Smith. "They have good speed and playmakers on offense. Their defense is fast and aggressive."

The two teams met in week three last year with Troy holding off the Wildcats. That proved to be the NTL decider, and there's a good chance the league champion may be decided in week two this year.

"No question this game has big NTL implications," Smith remarked. "Everybody knows that. We are excited for the challenge and understand we need to play very well to beat Athens. We are working and preparing hard to do that."

KEYS TO THE GAME
Athens - Ball security. They did a good job last week against Wyalusing, and will have to do so again this week. Troy will look to grind the clock away, so any turnover might mean they don't see the ball for a while.

Troy - Limit the big plays. Easier said than done with Davidson there as he can hurt you with his arm and legs in equal measure.

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Gage Marmor, Athens, WR - Marmor had a big day with two touchdowns last week, and Davidson's favorite target. Troy will need to keep close to him all night long.

Josiah Pesesky, Troy, WR - Pesesky had a touchdown return last week, and represents Troy's best big play athlete. He could be a wildcard in a game like this.
