THE WEEK AHEAD: GOLF HEADS TO DISTRICTS (AGAIN), WITH LEAGUE ACTION HEATING UP IN VOLLEYBALL AND SOCCER (2026-10-04)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The leaves are changing so that can only mean one thing - high school Fall sports action is heating up. Area golf will be at the District IV Individual Championships, while it will be a couple crazy weeks of volleyball and soccer as league titles get decided, with football continuing their slow march through league contests.

GOLF
Thursday, October 8 & Saturday, October 10
District IV Golf Championships: Towanda, Wyalusing, and Canton will have golfers competing to see who is the best in the district. The boys have six state qualifiers, with the girls getting three. 

FOOTBALL
Thursday, October 8
Wellsboro (1-5) at Towanda (3-3), 7 p.m.: Thursday night football for the Black Knights as they look to keep rolling from their win over CV last week. The Hornets come in on a 4-game losing streak.

Friday, October 9
CV (2-4) at Troy (5-1), 7 p.m.: The Trojans rolled past NPM for their fifth straight win, while the Indians fell at Towanda. It'll be homecoming for the Trojans. 

South Williamsport (4-2) at Wyalusing (0-6), 7 p.m.: It's homecoming for Wyalusing as they look to rebound from their loss last week to Montgomery. South is coming off a close win over Muncy.

Canton (4-2) at Muncy (3-3), 7 p.m.: Canton saw a big jump in the standings after their win over Sayre last week. They'll travel to Muncy, who is coming off a tough loss to South Williamsport.

VOLLEYBALL
Monday, October 5
Hughesville (8-3) at NEB (1-12), 7 p.m.: The Panthers have played better as of late as they look for a late season charge. The Spartans come in 2-2 in their last four matches.

South Williamsport (3-7) at Canton (4-7), 7 p.m.: The Warriors won the first meeting 3-0 on the road as they look to break a 4-game losing streak.

Tuesday, October 6
Wyalusing (10-5) at Towanda (9-2), 7 p.m.: It's on for the NTL title as four teams - Towanda, Wellsboro, NPL, and Athens - all have a shot. The Rams come in 7-1 in their last eight as they look to get revenge from the early season loss.

Athens (7-3) at Troy (4-8), 7 p.m.: Troy is coming off a tough loss to Williamson as they look to claw their way back to .500. Athens won the first meeting 3-0.

NEB (1-12) at CV (1-11), 7 p.m.: The first one went to five sets with the Indians pulling out the win. 

Wednesday, October 7
Williamson (7-4) at Canton (4-7), 7 p.m.: A win by Williamson all but sews up the NTL Small School title. It was a 3-1 win by Williamson in the first meeting.

Thursday, October 8
Wellsboro (10-2) at Troy (4-8), 7 p.m.: The first meeting of the season for the two teams. 

Sayre (5-7) at Canton (4-7), 7 p.m.: Sayre comes in 1-3 in their last four as Canton won their first meeting 3-0.

Towanda (9-2) at NPL (10-2), 7 p.m.: Another big one for the Knights as they loser is likely out of the running for the NTL Large School title. The Mounties are winners of 10 straight with the Knights taking the first match 3-0.

Saturday, October 10
Loyalsock (5-5), Montoursville (8-3) at Canton, (4-7): The Warriors host some tri-match action as they play five matches in six days.

GIRLS SOCCER
Tuesday, October 6
Troy (8-4-1) at Wyalusing (6-4-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans need a win here to stay in the NTL title hunt, while the Rams are 3-0-1 in their last four matches.

NEB (4-9-1) at Williamson (0-9), 4 p.m.: The Panthers won the first meeting 6-0 as they look to break a 4-match losing streak.

Towanda (3-7) at Athens (7-2-1), 6:30 p.m.: The Knights lost 2-1 in their first meeting at home.

Thursday, October 8
Williamson (0-9) at Wyalusing (6-4-1), 4 p.m.: The Rams won the first meeting 6-0 as they look to keep their momentum going.

NP-Mansfield (3-7-2) at Troy (8-4-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans gutted out a 1-0 win in their first meeting.

Saturday, October 10
Troy (8-4-1) at Montoursville (6-3-1), noon: The Warriors come into the week on a 5-match win streak as this will have big implications for district seeding.

NEB (4-9-1) at Towanda (3-7), 11 a.m.: The Panthers won their first meeting 3-0.

BOYS SOCCER
Monday, October 5
Williamson (8-1-2) at Wyalusing (1-11), 4 p.m.: Williamson won the first meeting 9-0 out at Tioga Junction.

Galeton (9-2-1) at Towanda (7-4-1), 6 p.m.: The first meeting ended in a 1-1 tie. The Knights need just two more wins to clinch a district berth.

Wednesday, October 7
Wyalusing (1-11) at Troy (0-12), 4 p.m.: The Rams won the first meeting in a 4-3 thriller as the Trojans look to end their nearly 2-year losing streak.

NPL (2-10-1) at NEB (5-6-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers broke a 3-game losing streak with a win over Troy last week. 

Friday, October 9
NEB (5-6-1) at Wyalusing (1-11), 4 p.m.: The Panthers won the first meeting 7-1 in their home opener.

Williamson (8-1-2) at Towanda (7-4-1), 6 p.m.: The Knights narrowly lost the first meeting, 3-2.

Saturday, October 10
Athens (7-2-1) at Troy (0-12), 11 a.m.: The Trojans welcome the Wildcats, who are 2-1-2 in their last five.

CROSS-COUNTRY
Wednesday, October 7
Troy at Chenango Valley: With nothing on the docket until the NTL Championships on October 17 the Trojans head north to get a race in.

Friday, October 9
Canton, Towanda at Newark Valley Invitational: The two teams head north of the border to get a race in before NTLs.

GIRLS TENNIS
Tuesday, October 6
Towanda (0-8) at Bucktail (3-8), 4 p.m.: The Knights head south for their season finale.
