FOOTBALL: TOWANDA USES BIG RUSHING ATTACK TO DOWN CANTON (2026-10-24)

Northern Tier Sports Report
TOWANDA — Towanda had over 450-yards of total offense as they rolled past Canton, 53-6, in NTL football action Friday.

The Knights ran for 352-yards on 38 carries, while holding the Warriors to just 159-yards of total offense.

"It really feels good," said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. "Sometimes the emotional toughness of the game is really hard to overcome, and, I think since the Troy game we've really struggled with that. We've been working our butts off in practice all the time, we just couldn't get it together on Friday nights the way we wanted. Tonight the kids just came out, they played together, and it was a complete effort on everybody's part. The big thing is these kids now believe they can play at a high level, and with young kids, the mental part of it is much tougher than the physical part, and I think we conquered the mental demons so speak."

Curtis Maynard led their 3-headed running attack behind 99-yards and a touchdown on nine carries, while Gage Evans had 14 carries for 86-yards, and three scores. Jazick Brown chipped in with 55-yards on six carries, and two touchdowns, with Gavin Woodbeck earning a 28-yard touchdown run.

"All three ran hard," said Wecker. "They blocked for each other really, really well, but when we had them running inside, and getting the dirty yards, they did it. They believed in that, and we told ourselves we can be a little bit more physical up front."

Reese Sluyter was 4-for-6 for 105-yards with a touchdown pass to Brown, who finished with 82-yards receiving on two catches.

Canton played without starter Owen Moore, with Brooks Wesneski stepping in to go 8-for-16 for 102-yards with a touchdown, and an interception.

Monte Whitehead was hit top target with four catches for 90-yards and a score.

Bailey Gardner ran the ball 12 times for 44-yards to lead the ground attack.

Evans got Towanda on the scoreboard first with a 5-yard run. Brayden Spencer hit the point after and it was 7-0 Towanda with 8:29 left in the first quarter.

On their next drive Brown scored on a 16-yard run, though Canton blocked the kick for a 13-0 lead with 6:18 on the clock.

The final first quarter score was a 5-yard Evans punch. The kick was no good but Towanda led 19-0 with 1:41 left in the frame.

Brown opened up the second quarter scoring with a 4-yard run with 7:05 left in the half. The 2-point conversion was no good for a 25-0 lead.

The final score of the half came on a Sluyter 57-yard pass to Brown with 2:24 to play in the second. Spencer's kick was good for a 32-0 lead at the half.

Evans opened up the scoring in the third quarter with an 18-yard run, coupled with Spencer's kick, made it 39-0 with 7:46 left in the third.

Maynard got into the end zone with 40 seconds in the quarter on a 20-yard run. Spencer's kick pushed the lead to 46-0.

With 8:38 left in the fourth the Warriors got on the scoreboard as Wesneski hit Whitehead for a 53-yard scoring strike. The 2-point try failed to make it 46-6.

Woodbeck ended the scoring with a 28-yard run with 6:03 left to play. Spencer's kick made it a 53-6 final.
