Northern Tier Sports ReportWyalusing volleyball went through a lot of turnover this past off season, and the 2023 season was about working fresh players into new roles.
“The 2023 Lady Ram volleyball season was a year of rebuilding,” said first year coach Renee Broschart. “I knew going into this season, we had a new chapter to write. We basically had a brand new team. With five returning letter winners who helped build a program that graduated nine seniors, we knew what kind of work we had ahead of us.”
The Rams went 5-15 on the year, opening the season with six straight losses, but followed that with three straight wins - Elk Lake (3-2), Sayre (3-0), and a thriller at Athens (3-2).
After three more losses to playoff teams they swept Lewisburg (3-0), and late got the season series with Sayre (3-0).
“We had some ups and downs,” Broschart said. “Some sets we started out strong and others we had to work our way out of a deficit. However, this group learned a lot.”
It was attack by committee for Wyalusing as six different players registered 50 kills or more. Gabby Manahan led the way with 64 kills while Madalyn Broschart was second with 56.
Addison Fluck had 44 aces to lead the team while Emily Johns was tops in points with 143. Wilson had 16 blocks to lead the Rams, one of three players to finish the season in double digits.
Kylie Pickett was team leader in digs (164) and assists (184). She also finished with 50 kills, showing her versatility.
They had just three seniors on the squad so there is plenty of room for internal improvement going into the 2024 season.
“We will take that knowledge to move forward,” Broschart said. “I feel it will help us get a faster start next season. I hope that we can get started right away working a lot on defense, building a stronger block and coverage. This team may be young, but this team has a lot of potential and I’m excited to see what the future holds for the Lady Rams volleyball program.”
