ATHENS — The young Towanda girls’ cross-country team made a big mark in their first NTL dual meet, beating last year’s two NTL champions - NEB (20-35) and Athens (22-36) - in their season opener Tuesday.
NEB edged Athens 24-32.
Athens’ Sara Bronson (20:50) won the race with Towanda’s Izzy Larson (21:27) and Mary-Kate Eberlin (21:40) second and third.
NEB’s Anaiah Kolesar (22:05) was fourth, followed by Knight Kenzie Brown (22:11) rounding out the top five.
NEB’s Amelia Kapr (23:16) took seventh, with Towanda’s Hannah Petty (23:44) and Layla Cobb (24:05) eighth and ninth.
The Panthers took the next three spots with Kara Dughi (24:11), Sophie Bennett (24:42) and Ruth Laudermilch (24:54).
In the junior high girls’ race Towanda defeated NEB (27-28) and Athens (24-31) while Athens and NEB tied at 18.
Towanda’s Maris Cobb (10:56) won the race.
