Northern Tier Sports Report
The first full week of Fall sports won’t disappoint. After a light Monday things pick up Tuesday and don’t slow down until after Athens football travels to Troy Saturday night.

FOOTBALL

Friday, September 13

Wellsboro (0-3) at Towanda (2-1), 7 p.m.: The Black Knights are coming off win over NP-Mansfield as Riley Vanderpool returned in a big way. They’ll host Wellsboro, who is coming off a herculean defensive effort in their loss to Wyalusing.


Canton (2-1) at NP-Mansfield (1-2), 7 p.m.: Canton came just inches away with picking up a win in one of the most thrilling games those kids will play. They’ll hit the road again as they travel to Island Parks and take over an NPM team coming off a road loss at Towanda.


Wyalusing (3-0) at Montgomery (1-2), 7 p.m.: It wasn’t pretty but the Rams stayed undefeated as they finished their NTL West tour unblemished. They hit the road to take on a Red Raiders team that is coming off a big win over Sayre.


Saturday, September 14

Athens (2-1) at Troy (3-0), 7 p.m.: The upstart Wildcats have their offense rolling on a 2-game win streak as they head to Alparon Park. Nobody’s confidence is higher right now than Troy’s after a big win over South Williamsport.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

Wednesday, September 11

Troy (6-1) at Wyalusing (5-0-1), 4 p.m.: The Rams haven’t allowed a goal this season while the Trojans are averaging 3.6 goals per game, so something’s going to give. Both teams are also undefeated in league play, though Wyalusing has the one tie with NEB.


Wellsboro (1-3) at NEB (1-3-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers come in on a 2-game losing streak after strong showings against Wyalusing and NP-Mansfield. The Hornets haven’t scored after their 4-0 win over NPM in their second game of the season.


NP-Mansfield (0-4) at Towanda (1-4) 6 p.m.: Towanda broke through in a big way with their seven goals against NEB. They’ll be looking to turn that win into a winning streak as they host the Tigers.


Saturday, September 14

NEB hosts Tournament, 9 a.m.: The Panthers welcome Elk Lake, Williamson, and Muncy. NEB plays Elk Lake at 9 a.m. with Muncy taking on Williamson at 11. The consolation game is slated for 1 p.m. with the title game at 3 p.m.


Towanda (1-4) at Meadowbrook Christian (1-2), 11 a.m.: The Knights hit the road to end the week as they travel to Milton. Meadowbrook opened the season with a 1-0 loss to Montgomery, beat CMVT, then lost to Tri-Valley.


Wyalusing (5-0-1) at Tunkhannock, 11 a.m.: The Rams hit the road for this away game against the Tigers.


BOYS’ SOCCER

Monday, September 9

Sullivan County (2-2) at Troy (0-6), 4 p.m.: It’s been a rough start for the Trojans, but they have been competitive in their last two games. The Griffins opened with win over NTL foes NEB and Towanda, then lost to Loyalsock (4-2) and Millville (3-0).


Tuesday, September 10

Athens (1-4) at Troy (0-6), 4 p.m.: The Trojans get another tough foe in this back to back. Athens opened the season with a win over NEB but has Lost every game since.


NEB (1-4-1) at Galeton (0-4), 5:30 p.m.: The Panthers’ early season road trips continue as they head out west. NEB has a win and a tie in their last two efforts while the Tigers have been out scored 27-3 so far this season.


NP-Liberty (3-2) at Towanda (3-2), 6 p.m.: The Knights saw their 3-game win streak come to an edge against Southern Columbia, but face another tough foe in NPL to start the week. NPL is coming off a loss to Wellsboro (4-1) but has wins over Galeton (twice) and Troy.


Thursday, September 12

Towanda (3-2) at NEB (1-4-1), 4 p.m.: One of the key match-ups of the week. The Panthers play just their second home game of the season, while the Knights will look to keep their early season momentum going.


Wellsboro (5-1) at Troy (0-6), 4 p.m.: A tough stretch for the Trojans, who have three quality opponents in four days. The Hornets are undefeated in the NTL, and have out scored opponents 26-3 this season.


Saturday, September 14

Towanda (3-2) at Wellsboro (5-1), 10 a.m.: After beating the defending league champions earlier this week Towanda gets their shot at the current NTL leaders in the Hornets. Wellsboro recently lost 2-1 to Milton but had started the season 5-0.


Williamson (4-1) at Troy (0-6), 10 a.m.: Their fourth game in six days as the Trojans host the defending league champions.


VOLLEYBALL

Monday, September 9

Williamsport (2-1) at Towanda (1-2), 7 p.m.: A tough non-league contest to start the season for the Knights. They host a Millionaires program that’s on the rise.


Tuesday, September 10

Troy (2-1) at Williamsport (2-1), 7 p.m.: The Trojans are coming off a big showing at the Williamson Volleyball Tournament, claiming the title as they hope to springboard off that momentum into this week.


Athens (1-2) at Towanda (1-2), 7:30 p.m.: A key early season meeting between the rivals. Towanda has losses to Williamson and Troy, with Athens getting losses to Troy and NPL.


Canton (1-2) at Williamson (3-0), 7:30 p.m.: After a slow start the Warriors have come on, beating CV in their home opener, and splitting with Williamson in bracket play at their own tournament.


Wyalusing (2-3) at NEB (4-0), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams are searching for their first league win after beating Elk Lake this past Saturday. NEB fell in the semifinals to Troy at the Williamson Tournament.


Wednesday, September 11

Troy (2-1) at Canton (1-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors welcome Troy for their rivalry. Troy edged Canton in two close sets (25-21, 26-24) at the Williamson Tournament.


Thursday, September 12

Wilkes-Barre at Towanda (1-2), 7:30 p.m.: Towanda’s busy week against big schools continues as they host Wilkes-Barre from District II. It will be Towanda third match in four days.


NPL (4-1) at NEB (4-0), 7:30 p.m.: NPL comes into the week with a 99-match win streak in the NTL. If they can get past Wellsboro on Tuesday for win 100 - ironically, Wellsboro was the last team to beat them in a league match - NEB will get their shot to end the streak.


Wyalusing (2-3) at CV (0-3), 7:30 p.m.: Both teams come in 0-6 in NTL matches so one team could be looking to break through.


Saturday, September 14

NEB at Loyalsock: The Panthers will head down south for a tri-match as they face some non-league teams.


Danville (2-1) at Troy (2-1), 11:30 a.m.: Danville comes in with wins over East Juniata and Lewisburg, but lost to defending district champions South Williamsport.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Tuesday, September 10

Troy, Wellsboro at NEB, 4:30 p.m.: The Panthers seem to be getting all their toughest opponents on the boys’ side out of the way early. They had Athens and Towanda last week, then take on more Large School foes this week in Troy and Wellsboro. Both NEB and Troy come in 2-0. For the girls there should be some good individual races between Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek, Troy’s Alyssa Parks, and NEB’s Anaiah Kolesar.


CV, Wyalusing at Canton, 4:30 p.m.: There should be a good boys’ race between the teams, while Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster and Wyalusing’s Trennan Tewksbury will showdown again after meeting at Lasagna last week. The Lady Rams comes in undefeated at 1-0.


Sayre, Sullivan County at Towanda, 4:30 p.m.: The Black Knight girls and boys are coming off good showings this past weekend at Lasagna as they look to get two more teams wins.


Friday, September 13

NEB, Troy at Owego Invitational, 6 p.m.: A rare twilight race with teams from both sides of the border.


GOLF

Tuesday, September 10

NTL at River Valley, 1 p.m.: Teams descend to CV’s course as Athens looks to take their league match victories streak into the 20s. Towanda and Wyalusing are coming off strong showings at White Deer last week.


GIRLS’ TENNIS

Monday, September 9

Bucktail (4-0) at Towanda (3-4), 4 p.m.: The Knights come in on a 3-match winning streak while the Bucks are undefeated on the season.


Wednesday, September 11

Towanda (3-4) at Wellsboro (2-4), 4 p.m.: The first one was a nail-biter with with the Hornets pulling out a 3-2 win.


Saturday, September 14

Montgomery (5-1) at Towanda (3-4), 4 p.m.: The Knights host one of the top programs in the district. Montgomery beat Towanda 5-0 earlier in the season.
