THE WEEK AHEAD: PLENTY OF BIG CONTESTS SANDWICH AROUND NEW YEARS (2024-12-30)

Another week with a big break in the middle, but there are still some key match-ups, especially on Friday as NTL girls’ hoops swings back into action.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, December 30

Troy (5-2) vs Horseheads at Elmira, 12:30 p.m.: The final day of the Josh Palmer fund Girls’ National Bracket contest as the Trojans and Raiders play for fifth place. Troy has gone 1-1 so far in the tournament.


Friday, January 3

Troy (5-2) at Wyalusing (3-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a 1-1 performance at the Hughesville Holiday Tournament, beating Montoursville but falling to the hosts for the second time this season. League-wise Troy is coming off a big win over NEB, whom Wyalusing lost to back in December.


NPL (2-3) at NEB (4-2), 7:30 p.m.: It will be nearly two weeks between games for the Panthers, who are coming off a tough loss to Troy. NPL went 1-1 at the Canton Holiday Tournament, falling to the hosts in the title game.


Towanda (2-4) at Athens (4-2), 7:30 p.m.: Not a tournament to remember for the Knights as they went 0-2 in the Josh Palmer Fund Regional Bracket. They’ll look to rebound against Athens, who went 1-1 at the Valley Tournament. Both teams have losses to Johnson City this year.


BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, December 30

Troy (4-1) vs Elmira at Elmira, 2:15 p.m.: These two will battle in the fifth place game in the Josh Palmer Fund National bracket. Both teams have gone 1-1 so far this weekend.


Canton (4-2) at Sullivan County (6-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors are coming off a win over Millville, whom Sullivan County also defeated this year. The Griffins will be looking to rebound from a loss to Towanda from before Christmas.


Benton (0-7) at NEB (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: After 11 days off the Panthers will look to keep their momentum going from their 50-47 win over NPL from just before Christmas. Benton hasn’t score over 20 points in their last three games.


Thursday, January 2

Canton (4-2) at South Williamsport (4-3), 7:30 p.m.: A quick turnaround for the Warriors as they hit the road again just after New Years. The Mounties started the season 3-0, but are just 1-3 since then.


Towanda (5-3) at Wyalusing (1-5), 7:30 p.m.: Towanda entered the Christmas break with two big wins, and they’ll look to get another one as they travel down the river. The Rams picked up their first win of the season, beating Meadowbrook Christian at the NPL Tournament.


Saturday, January 4

Troy (4-1) at CV (2-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans head out to Westfield to take on the Indians, who won two games before Christmas break.


WRESTLING

Saturday, January 4

Wyalusing at Line Mountain Duals, 9 a.m.: The Rams head south to the Line Mountain Duals for their final duals tournament action of the season.


NEB at South Williamsport Tournament, 10 a.m.: The Panthers will be looking to use the momentum rom their strong showing at the Jim Thorpe Tournament as they wrestle again a week later.


Troy at Towanda’s Flynn Duals, 11 a.m.: The Black Knights return home as they host another 8-team duals tournament. This will be Troy’s first dual meet action of the season as they look to integrate their football/wrestlers into the mix. There will be six matches on the day.


GIRLS’ WRESTLING

Saturday, January 4

Towanda, NEB at Montgomery Tournament, 10 a.m.: The two teams didn’t compete during Christmas break, but will be back in action to start 2025.
