THE WEEK AHEAD: TOWANDA GOES FOR THE LEAGUE TITLE ON THE MAT THIS WEEK WHILE HOOPS ENTERS CROSS-OVER PLAY (2025-01-19)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It’s the last week of regular season wrestling (hard to believe), as District IV Duals starts next week, with Towanda looking to clinch the league title. On the courts it will be Small School versus Large School as the league starts cross-over play.

WRESTLING

Monday, January 20

Elk Lake (3-6) at Troy (4-6), 7 p.m.: The Trojans have a slim chance to make the D4 Duals Tournament if they win out this week, beginning with the Warriors.


Tuesday, January 21

NEB (4-10) at Wellsboro (0-12), 7 p.m.: The Panthers head west as they look to wrap up their league dual meet season. NEB beat Wellsboro at the Hughesville Duals back in December.


NPL (5-6) at Wyalusing (8-12), 7 p.m.: The Mounties are still in the hunt for the D4 Duals, while the Rams will be looking to finish the regular season strong.


Sullivan County (12-7) at Canton (4-4), 7 p.m.: The Warriors need to win 1-of-2 to make the D4 Duals this week, beginning with a tough Sullivan County squad that has already punched their ticket.


Wednesday, January 22

Central Columbia (6-10) at NEB (4-10), 7 p.m.: The final home match for the Panthers as they welcome the Blue Jays.


Athens (6-0) at Towanda (18-3), 7 p.m.: This one is for all the marbles, with the winner claiming the league title. District IV Duals bracket spots are also on the line, adding even more importance for this win.


Williamson (10-2), Canton (4-4), at Troy (4-6), 5 p.m.: Troy will face Williamson at 5 p.m., then Canton after. The Trojans will need a clean sweep to get into the duals tournament, while Canton may need a win depending on what happens Tuesday.


Friday, January 24 - Saturday, January 25

Troy, Canton, Wyalusing, Towanda at Ultimate Warrior: A postseason preview as four area teams try their hand at one of the best tournaments in the state.


NEB at Bedford Tournament: The Panthers get one more tough test in before entering the postseason.

Wednesday, December 22

Canton (5-9) at Athens (3-9), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors will travel to the valley mid-week against the Wildcats, who are coming off a loss to Wellsboro.


NEB (11-4) at NP-Mansfield (11-3), 7:30 p.m.: The resurgent Panthers will have a big cross-over game with the Tigers, who are coming off a loss to Troy.


CV (2-12) at Towanda (8-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights are closing in on a playoff spot as they host a CV team stuck in a 9-game skid.


Troy (11-2) at Sayre (11-3), 7:30 p.m.: The two division leaders will face-off in the valley. The Trojans rolled past NP-Mansfield last week while Sayre comes in on a 5-game win streak.


Williamson (1-11) at Wyalusing (1-11), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a tough loss to East Juniata in double-overtime while the Warriors had back to back losses to NEB last week.


Friday, January 24

Athens (3-9) at NEB (11-4), 7:30 p.m.: A big game to end the week for the Panthers as they try to keep pace for the top spot in the division standings.


Canton (5-9) at Towanda (8-6), 7:30 p.m.: Canton’s road trip continues as they travel to Towanda. Canton beat Towanda in Towanda last year in this game.


Williamson (1-11) at Troy (11-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans will look to keep rolling as they host the Warriors to end the week.


Wyalusing (1-11) at NP-Liberty (7-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Mounties have gone 3-1 over their last four while the Rams will hit the road.

Monday, January 20

NP-Liberty (5-7) at Towanda (6-7), 6 p.m.: The rolling Knights come in on a 3-game win streak as they welcome the Mounties, who are 3-2 over their last five.


Tuesday, January 21

Wyalusing (8-6) at Williamson (4-9), 6 p.m.:  The Rams will look to bounce back from their loss to the Knights as they hit the road. Williamson comes in on a 5-game losing streak.


Sayre (1-10) at Troy (9-4), 6 p.m.: The Trojans have won four straight - all of them by double digits - as they welcome Sayre.


CV (CV (6-6) at Towanda (6-7), 7:30 p.m.: After a slow start the Indians have come on as of late, going 5-2 over their last seven.


NP-Mansfield (5-9) at NEB (10-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers have won six straight as they host a Tigers team that has lost their last four.


Athens (8-5) at Canton (9-5), 7:30 p.m.: Canton comes in on a 4-game win streak with Athens going 1-2 in their last three.


Thursday, January 23

Troy (9-4) at Williamson (4-9), 6 p.m.: The Trojans hit the road as they take on a Warriors squad.


NP-Liberty (5-7) at Wyalusing (8-6), 7:30 p.m.: Both teams have a lot of size as the Rams return home.


NEB (10-2) at Athens (8-5), 7:30 p.m.: A big cross-over match-up as the Panthers hit the road.


Towanda (6-7) at Canton (9-5), 7:30 p.m.: The second big home game of the week for Canton as Towanda creeps back towards .500.


Saturday, January 25

Wyalusing (8-6) at CV (6-6), 4:30 p.m.: The Rams take the long trip to Westfield to end the week.

Towanda at Bald Eagle Invitational, 9:30 a.m.: The Knights head south to take on some of the top competition from out west.
