
ATHENS — It was a pitcher’s duel at up Athens as Towanda fell 2-0 to the Wildcats during NTL softball action Saturday.
Nobody scored until the bottom of the sixth when the Wildcats broke the stalemate with two runs. Gretchen Hiley had a 2-hit, 2-walk, 18-strikeout performance from the circle for Athens.
For the Knights Aleah Johnson started, going 5 1/3-innings with eight strikeouts, two hits, two walks, and two earned runs. Tae-Lynn Brabant went the next two-thirds for Towanda.
Payton Perry (1-for-3) and Brooklyn Evans (1-for-3) had the two Knight hits.
Towanda came the closest to scoring in the top of the sixth when Perry hit a lead-off double. After reaching third Evans tried to bunt her home, but Athens got Perry out at home.
In the bottom half of the inning Gretchen Schmieg drew a 1-out walk, then scored on a Gretchen Hiley hit. Maddie Hiley then drove in her sister for the second run.
Towanda (1-1) will host NP-Liberty on Tuesday.
