
SHAMOKIN — Troy baseball lost a pair of tough non-league contests down at Shamokin Saturday, falling to Hughesville 11-9, and then Shamokin 8-7.
HUGHESVILLE 11, TROY 9
The Spartans led throughout, then held off a late Troy rally in the seventh to get the win.
The Spartans led 3-0 after one, and 7-2 after two. Troy cut it to 7-4 in the middle of the fifth, but in the bottom half of the fifth and sixth innings Hughesville added a combined four runs for an 11-4 lead.
Troy furiously tried to catch back up with a 5-run fifth, but it was just too much to come back from.
Brendan Gilliland (2-for-4) had 3-RBI, with a run scored for Troy as Mason Smith (2-for-4) scored three times.
Joseph Frye (1-for-3) scored, and drove in a run, with Reed Palmer (1-for-3), and Evan Woodward (1-for-4) both scoring.
Lincoln Chimics (1-for-4), Trey Teribury, and Logunn Heasley (1-for-2) all drove in a run, as Camden Allen (1-for-3) had a hit.
Allen took the loss, going three innings to strikeout four with five walks, eight hits, and seven runs.
Frank Harper tossed the final three innings with two strikeouts, two walks, three hits, and four runs.
After falling down 3-0 in the first Troy responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning as Allen hit a 1-out single. Woodward singled to put two runners on, setting up Teribury’s ground out that scored Jack Burbage - Allen’s courtesy runner - for a 3-1 score.
Heasley then drove in Woodward with a hit for a 3-2 score.
Troy scored again in the fifth as Smith led off with a hit, then scored on a Gilliland single.
Then in the seventh Harper and Smith both reached with one 1-out to get things going. A single by Frye drove in Burbage - Harper’s courtesy runner - to make it 11-5.
Gilliland then had a 2-run single for an 11-7 score. Palmer kept things going with a hit, setting up a Chimics single that scored two more.
Hughesville, though, got back to back strikeouts to end the inning, and seal the win.
SHAMOKIN 8, TROY 7
A 6-run inning from the Indians was the difference in this non-league contest.
Troy led 2-0 in the second, with Shamokin cutting it to 2-1 in the fourth. A 4-run top fifth put Troy in command with a 5-1 lead.
That’s when the Indians rallied with a 6-run bottom half to go up 7-5. Shamokin added another run in the sixth, with Troy rallying in the seventh for a run, and the 8-7 final.
Palmer (2-for-4) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI, as Teribury (2-for-3) drove in a run.
Smith (1-for-2), and Allen each had an RBI, while Woodward (1-for-3) scored twice, and Burbage crossed home three times.
Gilliland (1-for-4) also scored, with Frye driving in two runs.
Palmer went the distance in the loss, striking out four with seven hits, seven walks, and eight runs.
The Trojans struck twice with two outs in the second as Woodward had a single, followed by Burbage drawing a walk.
Teribury would drive in Woodward with a hit for a 1-0 lead. After a Smith walk Frye drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Burbage for the second run.
Gilliland led off the fifth with a hit, then scored on a Palmer double. Palmer later scored on an Allen ground out for a 4-1 game.
Woodward drew a 2-out walk to keep things going, then was brought home by Burbage. There straight walks to Teribury, Smith, and Frye scored Burbage to make it 6-1.
In the seventh Burbage reached, then later scored on a Smith single to make it a 1-run game. However, Shamokin got the final out to get the win.
Troy (6-4) travels to Wellsboro on Tuesday.
