The Sports ReportsSAYRE – For the second straight year, some of the best wrestlers in Pennsylvania and New York will compete on Desmond Street in downtown Sayre.
The second annual "Duals on Desmond All-Star Wrestling Showcase" will return to Sayre on Saturday, June 7 with youth, varsity boys and varsity girls matches between All-Star teams from Pennsylvania and New York.
Last year, more than a thousand fans flocked to Desmond Street in Sayre to watch the first-ever "Duals on Desmond," and they were treated to three outstanding dual meets.
Organizers are expecting an even bigger crowd this year as the enthusiasm for this unique event continues to grow.
“The first-ever Duals on Desmond was a huge success. We saw great wrestling on the mat and the atmosphere was outstanding with live music and food trucks on Desmond Street,” said Kyle Williams, who is one of the tournament’s organizers. “As soon as we wrapped up last year’s event, we started planning for the next one.
"We have put together an awesome lineup of wrestlers and coaches," added Williams. "A great local band, Bad Eye Deer, will be back to perform before the wrestling begins and we have some outstanding food and drink trucks that will be on hand.”
There are some incredible matchups already set, including a varsity girls battle between two state champions — three-time PIAA champion Brenda Banks of Panther Valley and two-time N.Y. champion Peyton Mullins of Dundee — and a varsity boys showdown between a pair of state medalists.
A complete lineup with be released in the near future.
The event will begin with Bad Eye Deer performing from 2 to 4:15 p.m. Opening ceremonies, including the Presentation of Colors by the Army National Guard, will begin at 4:30 with the youth dual kicking off the wrestling action at 4:45.
The varsity girls dual is scheduled to begin at 6 and the varsity boys will wrap up the event at 7:45. Times are subject to change, depending on length of matches.
