
The Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) Bradford-Sullivan Counties swim team again competed in the pool. May 17 six local athletes swam at 2025 North Snyder Swim Invite in Shamokin, Pennsylvania.
SOPA places athletes into divisions based upon their previous times in the various distances. Evan Haggerty led off winning gold medals in the 15-yard float and the15-yard kickboard. Elizabeth Porter then achieved a silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle.
The 50-yard freestyle featured Deborah Mapes winning a silver medal. In separate divisions of the 25-yard freestyle, Mara Davis earned the silver medal, Cole Fowler won the fifth-place ribbon in his division, and Mapes returned to win the sixth-place ribbon. Jacob Stiner won the bronze medal for the 100-yard freestyle.
Evan Haggerty won his third gold of the day swimming the 25-yard float. In the 25-yard backstroke, Davis and Cole both won the gold medal in the 25-yard backstroke. Mapes won the 6th place ribbon.
Porter took silver in the 50-yd butterfly. In the 50-yard freestyle Stiner won gold and Fowler won silver. Porter then won gold in the 100-yd backstroke. In the 50-yd backstroke, Stiner won gold and Davis won silver in their respective divisions.
At the end of the morning, Team Bradford-Sullivan competed in the 4x25-yard freestyle relay. This race featured Stiner, Fowler, Davis and Porter, swimming to silver in a very exciting race against the bronze medal team.
Special Olympics Pennsylvania Bradford-Sullivan Counties thanks Tioga Downs, the Knights of Columbus, the United Way, the family and community members in the Polar Plunge, and other generous supporters who make participating in competitions possible. The next competition will be the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games at Penn State University in State College.
