There may be a new coach for Wyalusing girls’ soccer, but Katie Fischer hopes this will be just a new chapter in the success they’ve had over the past five years.
That success has turned into higher roster numbers, with the Rams boasting 25 girls as the start the season.
“It’s so great that we’re able to get out on the field with a full scrimmage,” Fischer said. “I really think getting our junior high program a couple years ago really helped to continue this, because we had a lot of kids that just stopped playing soccer in seventh grade, or they’d go try another sport.”
Wyalusing comes off a season that saw them reach the district quarterfinals and fall in a close battle to a Muncy team that made the finals, giving them hope that they can stay competitive in the playoffs despite roster turnover.
“We really want to win districts this year,” said senior Treanna Nickeson. “It’s kind of been our goal for a while, so we’re hoping we can do that, knowing that we were that close.”
Nickeson has a been a 3-year starter and returns to head the backline for the Rams.
“It’s not a nerve-racking knowing that you know what to do,” she said. “You kind of feel like a leader so you can help all the younger girls, especially this year, we have a lot of newer girls.”
Fischer is especially excited to see what their big class of new girls can do on the pitch.
“I love seeing that they want to be here, that this is the place they’ve chosen to be,” she said. “They didn’t choose to just be at home or another sport. I love that they enjoy it so much that they want to be a part of this.”
Fellow seniors Addisyn Bly and Kenzie Kintner return in the middle.
“I like it,” Bly said about being in the middle of everything. “I feel like it gives me control of the field. I have choices, I can play defense, I can play offense. It calms me a little bit knowing that I have control.”
They’re hoping to lead a more potent Wyalusing attack this fall as that was an Achilles’ Heel for them a year ago.
“Finishing was our main struggle last year, but this year we’re really focusing on it,” Kintner remarked. “I think we’ll be able to overcome that battle.”
They also have to replace their keeper, Sophia Alvarez, but they feel Callee Warner is ready to step in.
“She worked a little bit with Sophia last year so I think she got a lot of wisdom from Sophia,” said Bly. “We’re working to get her ready for the season.”
The one thing Fischer likes about this group of upperclassmen is that they expect to win.
“A lot of the older girls, they’ve all been with the team, and they know the expectations,” she said. “They have high expectations of themselves, and they bring that to the underclassmen.”
And the seniors are enjoying the their time with the new coach.
“Miss Fischer has been with us along the ride,” Kintner said. “She’s always been supporting us so I’m feeling really good with her.”
League wise Troy comes in as the 5-time defending champions, while Athens is always a tough one, but the Rams are hoping to be right there with them.
“Playing those teams is always tough,” she said. “They’re tough teams to play. It kind of hurts to lose against them, so I think if we go with the right mentality and play hard enough we definitely have a good shot at beating them.”
