It was an ugly first week for Towanda, but they’re looking to put that behind them as they welcome Hughesville for their home opener on Friday with a 7 p.m. kick-off.
The young Knights lost to CV 38-0 in Westfield last Saturday, and coach Jamie Wecker hopes its a lesson well learned.
“We spent a lot of time revisiting just the fundamentals and learning how to handle adversity better,” Wecker said. “Last week, we got punched in the face and we didn’t respond well to it. That happens sometimes, especially with a young team. What’s important is that we start figuring out how to do that. We had a really good week of practice; the kids responded well to the film sessions and are really working hard to get to where they want to be.”
The Spartans had a tough week, too, falling to Montgomery but the Knights remember what happened when they went down there last year.
“Hughesville is a good team that attacks all areas of the field,” said Wecker. “The QB is athletic who can hurt you with his arm and his legs, with good running backs and receivers. The defense is stingy and flies to the ball.”
Towanda hopes they’ll be able to get a boost from their hometown fans as they work to right the ship.
“It’s always nice playing at home,” Wecker said. “The kids are really excited to play in front of their fellow students and our fans. It should be a great atmosphere.”
KEYS TO THE GAME
Hughesville - Slow down Towanda’s running attack. Last week they gave up 125 yards rushing to the Red Raiders, in a defensive slog that can make a difference.
Towanda - Take advantage of Hughesville miscues. The Spartans were undone by self-inflicted mistakes last week, if that happens again Towanda can’t afford to let them off the hook.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Connor Anstadt, Hughesville, RB - Anstadt led the Spartans with 49 yards on seven carries last week against Montgomery.
Jazick Brown, Towanda, RB - Brown could be the spark that Towanda needs to get their offense in gear.
