Towanda (1-5) broke into the win column last week as they host Athens (5-1) in an NTL Large School title Friday night with a 7 p.m. kick-off.
“The kids are really in good spirits,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “I just think getting that win kind of gives the kids a big boost mentally. Getting that monkey off your back can do wonders.”
The Wildcats come in with a high powered offense as they haven’t scored less than 35 points in a game so far this season.
“Athens is a very talented team,” said Wecker. “It starts with the QB, obviously he can hurt you with his arm and his legs; throws a great ball and runs like a running back. They have skilled kids all round him, also, with a good running back and good receivers. The O-line is tough and plays with confidence. Defensively, they fly to the ball and tackle well, so definitely a challenge.”
Athens’ signal caller Connor Davidson has been having a monster season.
“I don’t think you can really shut Davidson down, he’s a really good athlete,” Wecker said. “What you try to do is limit what they want to do with him, and try and make them uncomfortable - easier said than done. Our kids are really excited for the challenge. This is a measuring stick game for us to see how we’ve improved throughout the season.”
KEYS TO THE GAME
Athens - Disrupt Towanda’s offense. The Knights found their mojo on that side of the ball last week at Canton. They have some athletes that can do damage if they get out in the open field.
Towanda - Win the turnover battle. Slowing Athens down is a tall order, but getting turnovers may be easier - it’s how Troy pulled away from them in their only loss. Getting a few takeaways might help even the odds.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Karson Sipley, Athens, RB - If teams pay too much attention to Davidson Sipley can make them pay, so Towanda will have to stay disciplined.
Dominik Miller, Towanda, OL - With small backs Towanda’s O-line needs to give them room to make things happen. Miller might be a sophomore but has been key to Towanda’s success in the trenches.
