WYALUSING — It was a happy homecoming for Wyalusing as they pounded out 329 yards on the ground in their 42-7 win over Canton during NTL football action Friday.
Jonathan Earle led the attack with 20 carries for 174-yards and a touchdown while Ethan Vanderpool added two touchdowns and 69-yards on 11 touches. Reuben Kinney had five carries for 67-yards and a score as Jacob Gromley and Brian Dietz also had touchdown runs.
“I asked them at the beginning of the week that they would promise me that they would be focused for the game,” said Wyalusing coach Rich Rogers. “I know it’s a tough week with homecoming and all the activities, and their mind is elsewhere with all that, but I said, ‘please promise me this come game time, Friday night, you will be focused on the task at hand, and they were, so I’m happy for them.”
The Rams racked up 35 straight points before Canton got on the scoreboard thanks to a Ryder Route kick-off return.
“They’re hard running kids, and tough kids,” Rogers said. “It’s a privilege to coach them, really, for the last three years. To have those guys coming up through and being able to coach them and just happy for them to have a successful homecoming. They ran hard and had a great game.”
Coming into the game Rogers was worried about Canton’s passing attack after Moore’s performance last week, but felt his secondary was up for the job.
“I had said we hadn’t made too many plays this year, and I counted two or three where they did a nice job in coverage breaking up passes,” Rogers said. “I think we had two or three batted balls, too.”
Rogers was also glad to be able to get everybody in on their special night.
“We told them we’re going to make sure everybody plays,” he said. “We’re still going over Monday night for a JV game, so they’ll see each other again.”
Owen Moore had six carries for 47-yards to lead the Warriors while Dawson Burgess ran the ball for 17-yards on eight carries. Owen Moore was 5-for-16 for 27-yards and an interception. Leland Tubach had two catches for 12-yards for Canton.
Earle broke off a 58-yard touchdown run just over two minutes into the game for the first score. He added 2-point conversion for an 8-0 lead.
With 4:41 left in the opening quarter Vanderpool punched one in from 7-yards out, with Earle’s 2-point conversion making it 16-0.
Vanderpool added a 6-yard touchdown run with 8:18 on the clock in the second quarter, while the extra point failed for a 22-0 lead.
Kinney then scored from 3-yards out with 5:04 remaining in the half, as Addisyn Bly added the point after for a 29-0 lead.
Gromley punched one in from a yard out with 22 seconds left to put the Rams up 35-0.
Route would take the ensuing kick-off 90-yards to the house, with Alexis McRoberts adding the point after for a 35-7 ball game.
With 1:39 left in the third Dietz scored on a 1-yard dive, with Bly’s kick making it 42-7.
Wyalusing (2-5) will head to Athens next Saturday while Canton (1-6) travels to Wellsboro.
