MANSFIELD — Mansfield University rode a dominant defense and got big plays out of their quarterback as they rolled past Caldwell, 31-0, during CSFL action Saturday.
Marcus Quaker led the Mountie offense with 190 total yards and four touchdowns. He had 113 yards on the ground and three scores, while adding 77 yards through the air and a touchdown on 5-for-9 passing.
It was on the defensive end that the Mounties shone, led by a plethora of former NTL stars.
Troy standout Jackson Taylor had 10 tackles, and a sack, with fellow Trojan Jack Burbage getting 1.5 sacks and six tackles on the day.
Third Trojan Joseph Frye had four tackles, and defended a pass into the end zone, with Sayre’s Kaden Bennett and Canton’s Ben Fitch each had two tackles.
Athens’ Matt Macher had his second interception in as many weeks to go with three tackles.
Offensively, Canton graduate Weston Bellows had 16 carries for 29 yards plus one catch for five yards.
It was the Quaker show on that side of the ball, as he opened the scoring on a 5-yard run that saw him barrel into the end zone. Nolan Zona added the point after for a 7-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Quaker would add a 6-yard run midway through the second quarter for a 14-0 advantage after the Zona point after.
The Mounties would end the half with a goal-line stand to keep Caldwell off the scoreboard.
In the third Quaker got outside for a 43-yard scamper to the end zone, with Zona’s kick making it 21-0.
The Mounties sealed the win as Quaker hit Caleb Smith for a 36-yard scoring strike on a fake punt. Zona’s kick made it 28-0.
Zona would hit a 35-yard field goal late in the game for the 31-0 final.
The Mounties will travel to NAVY next Saturday with a 6 p.m. kick-off.
